Dog Clicker Training For Your Puppy Or Dog

By Judy Stevens

Dog Clicker Training, or training a dog with the use of a small clicker, was originally created by a dolphin trainer so that the dolphin could hear the sound while under the water. Since then, many other animal trainers adopted this method and clicker training has been used to train dogs, puppies, fish, elephants and other animals. Dog clicker training is used to teach older dogs as well as young puppies.

The clicker is usually a small metal tool that is held between the thumb and the pointer finger and is squeezed to produce a quick clicking sound. It is good because of it's consistent sound in volume and pitch. It delivers the sound to the dog quickly and does not injure the dog's ears. The sound of the clicker is used to associate the good behavior and reward the dog with the click.

When the dog obeys the trainer, the sound of the click rewards the dog and sometimes a small treat is given simultaneously. Without the click, a treat alone can confuse the dog as it sometimes is not given quickly enough. The dog and especially a puppy can move around and wiggle a lot and thus the dog will not know what it is being rewarded for. Pared with the click, the dog associates the good behavior immediately to the click and not just a treat.

At first, the trainer or owner will start clicker training by rewarding the dog with a click and a small treat for behavior that it is already doing. For example, if the dog is on a leash, and needing to walk slowly beside the owner, a quick click and treat will teach the dog that this behavior is good. If the dog starts to run ahead, or starts to chase a squirrel, the dog is not going to receive a click and a treat until the behavior is calm and walking next to the owner again.

Another example would be if the dog is routy and jumps on other people. Once the dog calms down, a quick click and a small treat reinforces this calmness. This is another way to positively reinforce the acceptable behavior.

As time continues in training, body language and voice commands can be used along side of dogs in clicker training. Together, they bring a strong message to the dog. It will help teach the dog quicker than just simple voice commands or treat commands.

Dog clicker training not only teaches the dog positive behavior and good habits, but can also teach a dog to reject bad habits such as chewing or barking. Dog clicker training is not just the responsibility of the owner to raise a puppy correctly but can add to the overall generation of the canine community. The dog will be a happier one.

Puppy Training And Few Tips

By Kausar Khan

Pets are adorable, innocent and more loyal than the human beings to a person. Same is the case with the puppies. Puppies are the most loyal of the creatures. They're fun and they're great. But in case, the puppy isn't trained it is disappointing. Puppy training is the part you should adapt as soon as you get yourself a puppy. For puppies learn slowly and if they're not trained, when they are grown up, it is quite not possible to make them learn something. The puppy training would help you learn more about puppies and dogs. You'll get to know more about their abilities and in result of the puppy training, your puppy would be more obeying to you.

It is really very important to start the training of your puppy as soon as you've bought it or got it so that the puppy does not develop some bad habits which would eventually be a problem when the puppy gets older. There are a number of ways to train the puppy and a number of trainings that you can give to your puppy. The different types of training involve the basic training at first. This training would help your puppy to listen to the commands such as sit, run & stay. This training also emphasizes on the puppy's socialization ability.

These were merely the main training parts; you'd be teaching the puppy in the meanwhile, you'd be training your puppy the "house-training" which would cover the in-house behaviors such as retraining the dog from contaminating the house. Training, you may provide is to be more sensuous to the atmosphere, this would be by playing the kind of games like hide and seek. Just hide something from the puppy and make him find it with his smelling sense. Make sure whatever you do, it is very procedural. Don't just choose a hard task at the first time. Make different levels to train your puppy.

There are more training dos and don'ts. One must never make a negative reinforcement or give a harsh punishment to the puppy. The puppies do have a short term memory. He might forget what exactly he has been punished for and would take it as if you're punishing him for something he did not even do. Instead of giving a harsh punishment or yelling only if you'd ignore your puppy a little, he would know that he did something wrong.

One must keep on praising the puppy. Praising can be done with treats or with affection and even with giving the puppy some special time. Puppies are very sensitive, they've greater emotions. One must really take care of the puppy's emotion in order to make your puppy well-mannered and interactive. And don't expect your puppy to start doing those great tricks within weeks, give it sometime. Good luck with the puppy training.

Puppy Basics

By Lynn Lamoureux

Training a puppy takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Supervision, consistency, and patience are vital to housebreaking and training your puppy. After you have found your perfect puppy name him/her and immediately begin to use his/her name when talking, playing, or feeding. This will help your puppy to learn their name quicker and easier.

To begin housebreaking, designate a particular area for your puppy to use as the "potty area." Be very persistent with showing them that this is where he/she is to relieve themselves. An eight week old puppy needs to go relieve himself approximately every 30 minutes to an hour, especially after every nap, mealtime, and playtime. Crate training is critical for housebreaking because it is a natural instinct for a puppy not to "mess" where they sleep. Supervision while outside or in the crate helps greatly with preventing accidents in the house or crate.

Socializing your puppy is a training step that many puppy owners over look. It's important for your puppy to be comfortable outside their immediate surroundings. Socializing your puppy gets him used to different people, places, and things. Take your puppy with you whenever you need to run an errand, pick up food from the pet store, or even a car ride.

Do Not go to public parks, rest stops, or around unvaccinated dogs with your puppy. The risk is too great, as there are too many germs for your puppy's young immune system to fight off.

If you are inconsistent in enforcing the rules, your puppy will become confused and take longer to be crate trained and housebroken. If you don't catch your puppy doing something wrong, then don't punish him for it. Positive reinforcements such as: treats and praise are both great ways to let your puppy know he/she has done a good job. This is how they begin their learning process to eventually be able to not only be housebroken, but learn tricks, etc.

Understanding Why Your Canine Whines

By Randy Michaelson

If you lacked the ability to communicate with words, how would you express yourself to others? This is the challenge confronting your pooch. He can only bark, howl, growl, or whine in order to tell you what he's feeling. This can confuse and frustrate owners who are unable to infer meaning from their dog's sounds.

Each expression has a different purpose. For example, if he barks, he's doing so to make a statement about something; if he howls, he's communicating with others far away; if he growls, that means he is issuing a warning. A whine is basically a request for attention or care, but that request may have different triggers.

If you can determine the reason your canine is whining, you'll be better able to identify whether he truly needs your attention. With this in mind, we'll describe the most common reasons dogs make this sound.

Learning The Habit Early In Life

The behavior forms early. When your pooch was a puppy, he learned to whine in order to get his mother's attention. His mother likely found the sound to be impossible to ignore. Her quick response reinforced the behavior. Thus, at an early age, your dog learned that whining resulted in his receiving his mother's attention.

When puppies are first adopted, they continue the behavior until it becomes clear that doing so fails to produce the same result. If their owner responds in a manner that is similar to their mother's response, the habit is further reinforced. If the owner responds only to check whether the pup is okay, but leaves soon after, the habit wanes. Adult canines that persistently whine do so because they have learned the behavior is still effective.

Separation Anxiety

Many dogs whine when they are left alone. They become anxious when nobody is present, especially their owner. In severe cases, a canine might start whining when his owner leaves him with other people. It is his way of expressing his desire to be near his owner.

Excitement Or Anticipation

A lot of canines begin whining because they are excited about something. Triggers can include anything that grabs your pooch's attention and creates an expectation. For example, he might hear you arrive home from work and stand by the front door to greet you. If he hears you talking on the other side of the door, he may start to whine in anticipation.

Owner's Attention

Some dogs whine simply because they crave their owner's attention. For example, they might yearn for their owner's direct eye contact. Or, they may want their owners to pet or praise them. Any response that implies their owner's interest - even yelling - can seem desirable to them.

Discomfort Or Pain

If your pooch is suffering from discomfort or pain, he will likely express himself through whining. With this trigger, the behavior is often instinctive; he may not even realize he is doing it. For example, it's not uncommon for canines to whine while recovering after a surgical procedure. The sound is not meant to draw attention from their owner. Instead, it is an automatic response to the pain.

In most cases (with the exception of pain as a trigger), whining is similar to nearly any undesirable behavior: it can be modified with training and repetition. That said, curbing the behavior in your dog may require patience, especially if he has spent his entire life accustomed to people responding to his whining.

Give him plenty of exercise and make sure his diet is healthy. Incorporate dog treats and a clicker to reinforce desired behavior. A single click and his favorite treat after he stops whining will gradually teach him the value of resisting the urge. Over time, he'll learn that his whining does not produce the results he wants.

All About Shock Collars For Dogs

By Dennis Scott

Have you ever wondered whether pet shock collars were effective and humane? Without researching the product, it can be hard to tell.

It may seem unsettling at first, but the more you learn about shock collars the better you'll feel about using them as a temporary learning tool for your pet.

Shock collars work by giving your pet a small jolt with electricity whenever its vocal chords vibrate at a high enough level. The electricity is dealt in a corrective amount and doesn't injure the pet.

The shock the pet receives is more akin to discomfort, than pain. The shock collar's highest setting is similar to static electricity on a metal object.

Before purchasing a shock collar for your dog, measure its neck. If you don't have a tape measure, use a piece of string instead and then bring it to the store. Then just compare the string to the sizes on the packaging. The collars usually come in small to large. If you buy online, line the string up with a ruler to judge the proper fit for your dog.

When you get your shock collar home put it on the lowest setting. Most quality shock collars come with setting meters that allow you to control the strength of the jolt. By starting out low, you will be able to decide the correct setting. Turn the notch up in increments until your pet behaves appropriately.

Please remember that a shock collar is not a permanent pet training tool. After your pet has responded as desired for a few weeks, it's OK to remove the collar.

Once the shock collar comes off, your dog should still associate nuisance barking with an unpleasant jolt. If your dog regresses and barking becomes a problem again, go ahead and put the collar back on for more reinforcement.

Socializing Puppies Helping Your Pup Develop Into A Friendly Dog

By Randy Ortonthal

Adult dogs that are comfortable around other canines and people have usually received proper socialization early in their life. It begins within the first few weeks following birth. If a puppy has positive experiences with others, he will typically develop into a healthy, friendly canine. You'll be able to place him within a variety of environments without worry regarding how he'll behave.

On the other hand, if a pup has been abused or has suffered negative experiences with others early in his life, he will likely display fear and distrust. This can have a major influence on his ability to remain comfortable around other dogs and people.

In this article, we'll explain how socialization begins with a puppy's exposure to his mother and littermates. We'll also describe how puppies learn to relate to the first people they meet, including their new owners.

Mother And Littermates

A puppy immediately learns to trust his mother. She provides warmth and protection. She gives him a feeling of security from the unknown and unexplored world that lies beyond his immediate environment. His mother is also the one who helps him learn how to breathe and eliminate. If his behavior becomes unacceptable, she provides loving but firm discipline.

His littermates provide an opportunity to interact with peers. He learns to play with them and test boundaries. This is the time during which he learns the value of relating to his own kind. Puppies who spend very little time with their littermates before being adopted often have trouble getting along with other canines in adulthood.

First Exposure To People

Professional breeders try to expose puppies to people within a few weeks of their birth. The earlier a puppy interacts with people, the more comfortable he will be around them throughout his life. Many breeders encourage kids to hold and pet the puppies in their care within the first week following their birth. As long as the interactions are supervised and children are taught to be delicate with the pups, this early exposure can prove invaluable.

Meeting Your Pup For The First Time

Most breeders prefer to keep puppies for seven weeks before allowing families to adopt them. During this period, the pups spend most of their time in the company of their mother. By the fourth week, they are spending an increasing amount of time away from their mother, and interacting with people. By the end of the seventh week, the pups are released to their new families.

When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to continue his socialization. During the first week away from his mother, avoid abandoning him for long periods of time. He will feel a sense of loss for his mother and littermates. Spend time with him to keep his attention occupied.

A lot of puppies go through a phase near their eighth week during which they suddenly display apprehension for anything that is unfamiliar to them. This lasts for a couple of weeks. It will pass.

Providing Ongoing Opportunities For Socialization

The first twelve months of a puppy's life are very impressionable. The experiences to which he is exposed will shape his behaviors for the rest of his life. It is critical that you take every opportunity to introduce your pup to new people and environments. Take him to a park where others bring their own pets. Take him on walks using different routes that expose him to a variety of other owners and their pets.

An ideal outlet for meeting others is within group obedience classes. This gives your puppy a chance to interact with his own species and other people in a friendly and controlled environment. He'll learn that those who are unfamiliar to him pose no threat.

A puppy who has received proper socialization early in his life typically develops into a friendly, happy, and well-adjusted adult dog. These are the qualities that make for a more pleasant canine companion.

Some Tip To Train Your Dog Not To Jump On People

By Randy Michaelson

Canines jump on people for three main reasons. First, it's natural. They do it from the moment they're born as they play with their littermates. Puppies learn early that jumping is a form of greeting; they continue to do it with people unless they have been trained otherwise.

The second reason involves how dogs interact within their pack. Jumping is an expression of dominance within the hierarchy. In your home, you are the pack leader. If your pooch jumps on you, it might indicate he wants to usurp your position.

Third, canines jump because their owners have either encouraged the behavior or have done nothing to discourage it. This often evolves over time as the dog gains confidence his jumping is not only acceptable, but welcome.

Allowing the behavior to persist is dangerous, especially if it is triggered by a desire for more authority in your home. With this in mind, we'll provide four quick tips below that you can use to break the habit.

Get On His Level

When you greet your canine, do so from a kneeling position. That way, you'll remove his opportunity to jump on you. If he attempts to jump, immediately tell him "no!" and block his body with your knee. Don't allow him to place his front paws on you.

When his feet are back on the ground, command him to sit. Greet and pet him - again, in a kneeling position - only after he complies.

Downplay Your Arrival

A lot of owners encourage their dogs' jumping by immediately greeting them whenever they arrive home. Doing this communicates to your canine that your arrival is a significant event. Through repetition, he will learn to become excited, which makes him far more likely to jump on you.

Whenever you come home, ignore your canine for at least ten minutes. Don't greet or pet him until that time passes. During the first few days, keep a spray bottle within reach. Spray him if he tries to get your attention by jumping on you. Also, ask your friends to do the same thing whenever they visit.

Master The "Sit And Stay"

Dogs can learn to sit on command within a single day. This command is critical for discouraging your pooch's jumping. A canine that complies when you tell him to sit is less likely to jump on you. Sitting has a calming effect. For this reason, make sure your dog has mastered the sit command.

While canines can easily learn to sit, they have more difficulty staying still. Invest the necessary time to train him. Start with short periods and gradually lengthen them, using treats as training incentives. The effort is worthwhile. Like sitting, staying still has a calming effect and subtly discourages jumping.

Avoid Competitive Games

This is another activity in which owners participate without realizing it inspires their dogs to jump. They'll engage in competitive games with their canines. For example, they'll play tug-o-war with a rope or chew toy. Or, they'll wrestle with their dogs.

This leads to problems because dogs do not understand that a specific behavior may be acceptable during certain times and unacceptable during others. Instead, they learn the aggressive activity is acceptable at all times. The competition also trains them that challenging their owner is acceptable.

Look for opportunities to play with your pooch, but avoid participating in "harmless" games that pit both of you against each other.

Training your canine to stop jumping on you, your family, and your friends should take less than a week. The key is to be consistent in your approach. Consistency removes any confusion and reinforces your desired message. Your dog will quickly learn to conform to your wishes and interact with you on your terms.

Useful Tips For Training Your Dog Successfully

By Lauren Miller

It is common to see dogs that can do not just tricks but also chores. Some dogs can fetch things in the house, some can open doors, and others can do addition by their barks or even run errands for their owners. It is no wonder there exists a special relationship between humans and dogs.

Dog owners who do not have skills to teach their dog to do anything can try to do so as early as possible while their dog is young. The younger the dog, the easier they are to be taught basic obedience.

The first thing any owner would teach their dog is how to sit. Just like any other command, the sit command cannot be taught overnight. You need to have a lot of patience (and a lot of treats) until the dog finally masters it.

When you start training, you could give your dog treats for successful commands. However, as you progress, wean him off the treats so that the dog will follow your command because you told him so and not because he wants to get a treat.

As you slowly take out treats from your training process, make sure that you give positive recognition for every command that your dog follows. Dogs associate high-pitched voices, much like baby talk, as a positive reinforcement.

If your dog does not follow you, do not shout and hit him! Instead, correct him with "No" but make sure you say it in a deeper voice to show the dog that you mean business. As soon as he stops, repeat the process again.

As mentioned earlier, a dog cannot learn a trick or to obey a command in a day; therefore, exercise patience and be consistent with your training as dogs vary in their ability to obey or to learn a trick.

Remember that you do not need to be a professional dog trainer in order to teach your dog to obey a command. A bit of research, diligence, and patience can make it possible for you to train your dog.

Few Standardized Principles On Dog Training

By Kausar Khan

Just like human beings, dogs are found to have different nature, behavior and perception. They are born with different perceptions, habits and natures. To train them well, different efforts and methodologies are applied which follows in accordance to the nature, habit and perception of your dog. So most significant step for dog training is to know your dog. If you know what is their natural behavior, perception and habit then it can be very easy for you to train them well. One thing which you must consider for dog training is that dogs act like humans in many aspects and they do not like harsh and strain behavior applied on them.

Dogs are really intelligent animals and there intelligence is different varying from one type of dog to another. Some factors are involved to differentiate in this regard. These facts can be age, surrounding, breed or general behavior. However, there are certain effectual principles for dog training which can lead to successful dog training and these can be applied universally to every dog disregarding breed, age, surrounding or any other facts. These facts revolved around the "knowhow" of a dog. Here are those simple but effective principles which you need to follow to train your dog.

First principle which you need to follow strictly is not to hit your dog. Beating your dog for no reason and forcing him to learn what you desire can be proved unhealthy. This is the most ill mannered method and it does not follow human nature. Dogs will also get harmed from beating and hitting methods and this can turn them possibly into more defensive or more violent in future and this can also be harmful for others. Teaching with friendly methods is good. If your dogs do not learn by friendly methods, then you can slightly hit your dog. But make sure you are still friendly to your dog.

If a dog learns one habit, it is very difficult to change that habit. For example, try fetching a ball by picking it up in front of your dog and then throw it away making him go and pick ball up for you. After a few tries, your dog will learn this habit. Now, even if you try mocking fetches then dog will quickly jump for the ball. That is because the dog is trained for such habit. Now changing this habit is really difficult. Be sure that you are training your dog with right habits and behaviors.

Understanding your dog is most important principle for dog training. Even dogs express the mood he is having through some gestures like tail wagging, jumping and many other gestures. Learning the right gestures can help you out in dog training. Just for an example, snarling done by a dog usually indicates anger or when some stranger is spotted, tail wagging indicates a friendly mood of dog and the tail between legs reflects timidity. Therefore learning the right mood of your dog and treating accordingly to the mood of your dog can easily let you train your dog.

Reasons Why Dog Crate Training My Dog Is A Good Idea

By Douglas Jones

Dog crate training is an often overlooked method of the canine education process and that is sad because a pet that's correctly crate trained is noticeably happier and a lot more balanced. In fact, these remarkable animals consider their cages to be their very own special area where they can feel safe.

Getting your pet used to going into a small kennel provides your pet with a secure and safe haven. In addition, if you want to travel with your pup or simply just take your pet to a vet you may have to place him in one and if he's already used to the portable home, this can be an additional bonus. In case your furry friend is requiring potty training, a one of these tools will help in a very big way.

If you are heading on a getaway with your furry buddy, regardless if you are driving a car or even taking a jet, you should look at a crate. The fact is, if you want to fly on an airline with your best friend she will need to be inside one and won't that end up being a lot easier if he or she already thinks of this device as a safe place? Getting your puppy used to and even welcoming it will certainly make it a lot less complicated in case you have to travel.

If you're not taking your best animal friend with you on vacation, you could have to board him somewhere, and whenever he is being boarded, he is destined to be in a crate or a kennel. Naturally, he'll probably be scared of the new circumstances and afraid because you will not be there, but when he is already used to being in one and considers it a secure place this can significantly help towards calming his anxiety.

These tools may also help in the course of potty training. It is well-known that puppies will not soil where they rest, therefore if you wish to keep your little guy from going in the house, using one of these animal homes is perfect. Nevertheless, it ought to be noted that you need to take into account your furry friend's physical needs above all and you need to recognize that he can only hold it for so long particularly when he's a baby. It would be inappropriate to place your youngster in the cage for 10 hours if you are at the office when you understand he can only hold it for 5 hours. This will only be asking for failure.

Furthermore, you ought to choose one that's small enough so that your canine can't find a faraway corner to do his "business". These devices should only be utilized for house training provided you can keep close track of your pet and let your pet out whenever you recognize he's showing the signs that he must go.

Having one readily accessible to your dog satisfies his natural instincts. In the wild, canines like to live in dens or sleep in secure areas. Your dog's crate can certainly become a den that provides your pet the security he wants right in your own home.

Dog Training: The Guiding Principles

By Stanley Duray

If you've never trained a dog in your life, it may seem like an imposing job. Truth be told, there's a lot to learn, so we won't tell you you can learn everything there is to know in a single article. BUT... You can learn the basic guiding principles that will help you to understand the whole training process, to know why it works and how it works. Here are the three core principles of dog training...

Consistency, Consistency

You simply cannot do one thing one day and another thing the next. If stealing food off the table gets a whap on the nose, it has to always, always, always get a whap on the nose. The only exception is when you don't catch them doing it. Doing a trick should always result in a treat or a scratch behind the ears. It's all about consistency. You need to treat them the same day in, day out.

Use Equal Parts Positive and Negative Reinforcement

Don't just punish your dog for being bad, reward them for being good. You need to include both in your training regiment in order to raise a dog who is well disciplined, loving, and who knows that they are loved. If you're inconsistent or if you use an unbalanced training program where it's all punishment or all reward, you wind up with one of those dogs that we like to call "a spaz".

Love Your Doggy

Don't just devote all your time with them to training. If you're only a disciplinarian, they might listen, but they'll only be listening out of fear. If you take care of your dog, if you give them good food, play with them, scratch and pet them just for fun and to show affection, they'll obey out of love, out of a want to make you happy, not merely out of being conditioned to listen.

By Kausar Khan

Dogs are really faithful animals and they have a good IQ as well. They understand many things taught to them. They can be trained well by teaching them in several actions with a verbal command. Also when you feel your dog has done something you want them to do. Then appreciate it and provide them with rewards. Rewards such like food treats or leaving them with other dogs can be good.
