Puppy Leash Training - The Kind Gentle Way To Train Your Puppy

By Chris Station

Training your new puppy to accept a collar and lease is the key to successful training. This is called puppy leash training and it can start just as soon as he is settled in his new home.

Training your dog to become accepting of a collar and leash is important because it will set you up to be in control. Once your dog accepts that you are in charge, training has a much better chance of success.

When your puppy learns that he must accept his collar and lead, you will be able to move onto other areas of dog training. Here's what to do to teach him to accept his collar and lead.

It's important that the collar fits properly. Too loose and he'll back his way out of it. Too tight and he won't be comfortable. Try adjusting it so you can slip two fingers easily between his neck and the collar.

At first when you put his collar on he'll need lots of affection and attention to stop him from thinking about the strange thing around his neck. It will take some time for him to get used to it. After he is used to the feel of the collar you will be able to move onto the next step in your training of your puppy. Leash training becomes much easier if you give him time to just get used to wearing his new collar before trying any other training.

The next step is to attach a short, very lightweight leash to his collar. The leash should not be longer than about three feet. Allow him to just drag it around for short periods of time. The idea is for him to get used to the feel of having something attached to his collar.

Be sure to keep a close eye on him while he is dragging the lead around. He may become frightened and agitated if he gets stuck for any length of time. Your job is to ensure that this doesn't happen. For right now, simply making him aware that the leash restricts him briefly is enough. Remember, you want this to be a positive experience for your puppy.

It won't take long before he gets used to the feel of his leash. When this happens, instead of letting the leash drag freely, attach one end of the lead to you. Allow him to explore and get himself stuck like before. But this time, do not go to him to untangle his leash.

Instead crouch down and call his name. Reach out your hand and offer him a toy or treat to try to get him to come to you. Praise him lavishly when he comes to you. Do this for a short time each day. Undo the leash after he has successfully come to you a few times, but always leave on his collar.

You will know that your puppy leash training has been a success when he routinely comes when called after reaching the end of the leash. With this success, the rest of his puppy training will go so much more smoothly.

Advice On Selecting The Best Dog Cage

By Ran Tyler

Investing in a quality dog cage is the first step toward helping your beloved pet feel secure and safe. Dog cages are definitely useful, especially for people who have a new puppy that still needs a little training, or if you simply need a secure place for your bigger dog to sleep. From your local pet superstores to specialty online retailers, there are a wide variety of cages (in both size and price) to choose from.

No matter what your needs and those of your pet, there is a dog cage available for you. The one thing you need to pay close attention to is the size of the cage and whether or not your dog will be able to fit comfortably when inside. As a rule of thumb, your dog needs to be able to stretch, turn around and lie down comfortably. Some dog owner's make the mistake of getting their small dog a crate built for a larger animal, thinking the bigger the better. This is not the case and it is not wise to get a dog crate that is too big.

That's because you want to provide your dog with an area that feels safe and comfortable. When you give your dog too much space, they can actually feel scared and uncomfortable instead. No matter what size cage you need, they are all built from plastics, wood and metals. You need to pay close attention to the material and structure to ensure your dog will be safe and the cage is strong enough to keep the dog secure.

If you need a large cage, seek one made from metals and wood, because plastic has a tendency to deform and become brittle. The comfort of your pet should also be considered. Be on the lookout for sharp or protruding edges. In the end, these can cause your pet injury and are not safe.

Also look over the way the cage locks. Make sure it will not end up hurting your pet in any way. One you buy the crate, there are also some other things to think about. Adding a soft bed and a few of your dog's toys will create a comfortable atmosphere for your dog.

This helps to encourage and invite your dog to enter the cage and makes it easier for him to feel he has a spot of his own. If these don't work at first, try coaxing your dog into the cage with a few of his or her favorite treats. Do this until your pet gets used to the new surroundings.

Training Your Dog With Using A Clicker Device

By Roger Hammond

As you will discover when starting the training process, everyone thinks their way is the most effective when it comes to teaching your dog good behavior. Advice usually will come pouring in from other dog owners as soon as you get home from the pet shop. Just like when you have a newborn baby, each person you talk to feels that they understand just how you feel.

The use of clickers for dog training has had a re-surge in popularity. Essentially, a clicker does just that -- it's a small box-like device that emits a click sound when pressed, and it allows you to show pride and appreciation for your dog whenever they exhibit excellent behavior or restraint. The real element of using a clicker for dog training is teaching your dog what the sound actually represents.

Obviously, the first step is to buy a clicker. A book describing the clicker training procedure, available in most pet shops, will also be quite useful. Teaching your dog his first trick, such as following the "sit" command, is a good initial step. Attempt to get your dog to sit on his bottom, as you tell him to "sit". Once he follows the instructions, reward him with his favorite treat while clicking the clicker box once. Do this every time the dog is given a treat - click. In short time, the dog will associate being rewarded for their excellent behavior with the click.

These days, there are many Dogs that participate in competitions, that are clicker trained. Whenever you watch television, keep an eye out for a person using a clicker to help these trained dogs run through courses complete with jumps and hoops. This can be an excellent method to get your dog to obey if you can remember the simple "order, treat, clicker" process.

The use of a clicker to train your dog puts you front and center as the person distributing both rewards and discipline while also making the dog aware of how much you appreciate it when they demonstrate good behavior. As a result, the relationship between you and your dog will be strengthened.

It is also important to note that dogs really like and react well to rewards as opposed to discipline, so remember to use the clicker as much as you can to be effective.

Positive Experiences With Your Dog Training

By Adriana Noton

Dog training can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your pet when done in a positive manner and with the right attitude. Your dog just wants to please you and when you are both happy everyone has fun, so make it a fun experience. But when your pet starts bad behaviors you have to nip them in the bud. Like chewing for example.

Chewing is a natural behavior for a dog except when it occurs on your new Kenneth Cole boots. Chewing keeps their teeth and gums healthy and you will find a variety of toys and bones in the pet store. Dogs like to exercise their jaws so it is smart to get them a chew toy right away, like with the dog when you bring him home.

When a dog has his own toys to chew on he will be less tempted to chew on your favorite pair of Manolos. If you catch your puppy chewing on something he isn't supposed to tell him "No Chew" very monotone and sternly. Make him sit down and praise him for listening to your command to sit. Then give him a toy he can chew on to show him an example of what is okay.

Constantly praise him and reward him for good actions such as when they urinate in the correct area or when they play with and chew their toys. The reward system encourages good and consistent puppy training.

Keeping your pet off of the furniture is a big part of training him in the house. When he is on the furniture and he is not supposed to be tell him "Off" very sternly. Nudge him off of the furniture quickly by pushing his midsection with your knee or hand. Then make him sit. Praise him for obeying the sit command.

Crate training is a great way to train your puppy. It can be used to potty train your dog pretty quickly. Introduce the crate to your puppy slowly and put it in a place where he will get a lot of attention.

Put a towel or a blanket inside of the crate and play with the dog there. Encourage the dog to go inside by putting treats in there for him and leave his favorite toy just outside of the opening. Them move it to just inside of the crate and put treats inside. Don't force him to go in, let him get used to it and leave the door open during this time. It can take some time for him to get used to it.

The next step is to feed you dog near the crate, then after a few tries put the food inside. When you think he is comfortable close the door when he begins to eat inside of it and open the door when he is finished eating. Each time leave the door closed a little longer. If your dog cries leave him in there for about 10 minutes and don't react to his crying. Let the dog see you when he is inside.

Getting Started With A Dog Training Business

By Rick Dupont

Just because you may not be entering your dog into any competitions, this doesn't mean that they shouldn't still be trained. Even house dogs need to have some obedience and other training, to make them the best dog they can be. You want to have a dog that's a joy to be around and not one that you're constantly having to discipline. Any dog can be trained regardless of their age and breed.

Typically a dog training business can be run from home because in most cases you'll be going to clients' homes to train their dogs. Working at home will not only be more convenient in terms of time and money but also more comfortable for the dog. To begin your dog training business you will need to have the right training because clients need to know that you're going to be skilled and get them the results they're looking for. A psychology major is usually the best place to start and you may also want to get a degree in veterinary services.

One helpful home dog training tip that helps with housetraining is to make it an enjoyable experience for your dog to go outside to the bathroom. People are often in such a rush these days that when they finally do take their dog out to go to the bathroom they're rushing things and trying to get them to hurry up and go back inside. This behavior is going to be confusing to the dog and they won't be as eager to go outside when they feel the need to go to the bathroom. Having a dog that barks when it's late at night and there's noises outside is one thing and can help protect your family and home, but when they're barking incessantly during the day and night it can be downright annoying to not only you but also your neighbors.

There are also clicking devices which are effective dog training aids. It's used when training your dog and with practice this clicking device can be just as useful for positive reinforcement for your dog as a treat. Click it every time your dog does as you tell them and they will start to understand when they've done something right. There are even dog training aids to help a dog with anxiety.

If this doesn't work try putting them outside when they bark and see if this helps. After this it would be wise to bring the dog to the vet to make sure that they're in good health and don't have any health conditions that are causing them pain. These are just a few of the most basic home dog training tips. Training your dog to be well behaved is important so you can enjoy going out with them, bring them out to public places and have a great life together.

Some Ways To Housebreak An Older Dog

By Stanley Duray

If you have a new dog that once belonged to someone else and has not been bought as a puppy it will be important for you to make sure that it is properly housebroken so that it does not start defecating and urinating inside the home. If this situation has been occurring and then it is very important that you find ways to housebreak your animal. There could be a plethora of different reasons why they are doing this and the most common to all simply because they have not been trained for all have gone through some difficult times in their lives. Here are a few ways to housebreak an older dog if you are having this problem.

You need to know that there are certain times of the day where the animal will commonly want to go out and use the toilet. They will want to do so usually in the morning, in the evening, and also roughly 30 minutes after they have eaten. You need to keep to these times when you are taking them out.

You need to be doing this and doing it on a regular basis. If you bring your dog outside and they end up doing the right thing and using the toilet in the right place and at the right time then you should make sure that you offer them some praise by giving them a little edible treat and stroking them or patting them on the head.

When the dog is inside the house and make sure that you contain it within certain areas of the house and shut off all places such as the living areas and bedrooms. You should also keep the animal in your sight at all times when you are nearby.

Any time that you do bring the dog outside and they have not used the toilet as you might expect them to have after about 15 or 20 minutes, then you should simply bring them back inside and return outside again about 20 minutes afterwards.

You also need to ensure that that you feed the dog at certain times of the day each day. This needs to be able to fit around your own schedule and needs to be at the same time every day of each week. You should make sure that you bring the animal outside half an hour to an hour after each meal.

If the dog does end up going inside, then you should have some proper methods of punishment ready to use. These should not be too harsh, as this will not help matters at all. If you do these things your dog should be housebroken in no time.

What You Should Know About House Training A Dog

By Brad Davenport

When it comes to house training a dog, pet owners can often feel like they have all the wrong ideas. Sometimes they seem to resist house training to the point where you wonder if you'll ever break them of the habit of going to the bathroom in the house. But there are secrets of house training a dog.

The first type of house training usually consists of using puppy pads. This is also called paper training. This would involve keeping a close eye on your animal for several weeks and working with them as you move the puppy pads closer and closer to the door. However, this method typically involves lots of "accidents" and will result in cleaning up after the pet quite a bit.

Another favorite is crating the dog and letting them out periodically to go. Again, you have to be diligent because a dog does not know when you are planning to let them out. You have to start out with frequent trips and slowly increase the time between. Dogs will not go in their home so this only works if you crate them in a small enough unit that they cannot go off to a corner to relieve themselves.

One of the best methods is association. Dogs love repetition and learn well this way. Each time you want them to go out, take them to the door and say a command like "outside", "potty", etc. They will learn that when they hear that word they should go out. Again, diligence is the key. Soon you won't have to lead them to the door or say anything because they will go by themselves.

The secrets of house training a dog can depend upon the breed you are trying to train and the setup of your home. If you live in an apartment building, for instance, the method that you'll use will be quite different than that of someone who has a fenced in backyard. Therefore, the training method should suit the circumstances and situation.

Reinforcement Techniques Used In Dog Training

By Kurt Dorey

An obedient dog is a good dog, but they do not get this way naturally. In order to get a well-trained dog, one must begin the dog's training and conditioning while the dog is still very young. For the most part, people attempt dog training on their own, however there are a few who may turn to an obedience school for very thorough dog training.

Positive reinforcement is the most widely recognized technique used in training a dog. This is normally achieved by a reward system. The reward can come in the form of verbal praising of the dog's actions or, an even more effective manifestation, in the way of a treat. The dog treat as a reward virtually guarantees cooperation from your pet.

On the other side of the coin, many pet owners use negative reinforcement to combat bad behavior. This can be as simple as the classic "bad dog" or a tap on their behind to let them know that they were bad. Many advanced forms of negative reinforcement use some sort of electric collar.

A bark collar is a common device used in dog training for dogs that bark too frequently. A bark collar can be fitted around the dog's neck and will send out a mild electric shock every time the dog barks. By doing so, the dog will eventually learn not to bark.

There is another form of negative reinforcement that utilizes the same basic principle as the bark collar. A shock collar used in conjunction with an invisible fence is used to contain the dog in a particular area such as a yard or piece of property. The dog receives a mild shock each time she attempts to cross the boundary line which in turn lets her know the limitations.

Housebreaking a dog is a very important step during training. Both types of reinforcements should be implemented, keeping the negative reinforcement extremely mild. When a dog goes to the bathroom outside, she should be rewarded. If she goes to the bathroom inside, use mild dicipline. A dog's name should not be used for negative reinforcement as the dog may think he is just being summoned.

Training a dog is not often a very easy task, but it can be very rewarding. Dog training takes a lot of patience and love and laziness will often yield poor results. A disciplined dog will be a joy to have around the home, but only if the master has the discipline to train them properly.

Ten Tips On Dog Training: Train Your Dog At Home

By Chris Station

What dog owner doesn't want a well-behaved dog? But it doesn't just happen. Training is the only way to achieve this. In order to be able to successfully train your dog, there is some basic information you need to be aware of before you start. Here then are the top ten tips on dog training.

1. Begin just as soon as you bring that new puppy home. It's crucial to establish routines immediately in order to avoid problems later on. For example, if your dog is not going to be welcome on the couch when he gets bigger, then don't ever let him on the couch as a puppy. If you want to cuddle with him, get down on the floor with him. You want the habits he learns to be good ones, not bad ones.

2. Be firm, but fair and consistent. If you change the rules you will only frustrate and confuse your dog. So, if you don't want your dog to beg food from the table, don't ever feed him treats while you are eating.

3. One of the very first things you should do is to get your new puppy used to a collar and lead as soon as you bring him home. You have so much more control when a dog is trained to accept a collar and lead.

4. Training your dog should be fun for both of you. Celebrate his accomplishments by rewarding him. Rewards can be everything from a scratch behind the ear to praise or even a small treat. He will work harder if he knows a reward is waiting for him, so you will be able to accomplish lots in a short time.

5. You need lots of patience if you are going to be able to successfully train your dog. Progress will be slow, with lots of repetition needed before the behavior will be truly learned. And remember to reward each success as it occurs to reinforce the behavior you are targeting.

6. When disciplining your dog, never use the command "come". The command "come" should only be used in a positive way because it is such an integral part of training. Don't hit your pet when you are disciplining him. This will only cause him to fear you and it will end up damaging the trust between the two of you.

7. Whenever you start a new session of training, the first thing to do is to quickly review the behaviors that your pet has already mastered. Then as always, reward him and move on to something new.

8. Keep lessons short. You never want to drag things out to where the training becomes a chore. So if your dog begins to lose focus, end the lesson with a simple-to-follow command. Then give him a reward and then spend a few minutes playing with him.

9. Always teach basic commands first. Things like sit, stay, down, and come are integral for success with more involved dog training. So be sure he has mastered these commands before you try to teach him more complex commands.

10. You have probably noticed that rewards are used liberally when training your dog. It can't be emphasized enough how important it is to only reward when a command is executed properly. If you give him a treat whether or not he sits at your command, there is no real reason for him to do as you ask.

Following these tips on dog training will help you to successfully train your dog. And after all, isn't a well-behaved dog much more rewarding to have around.

Advice On Buying The Correct Dog Cage

By Fran James

It can be very confusing when looking to buy a dog cage for your best friend. The reason for this is that there are so many types available. These vary from the heavy duty metal dog cages to the smaller, cut, decorative ones that tend to appear more like a piece of furniture.

You will probably find one of the most popular and cheaper types are the wire cages. These are easy to service and are often used for crate training and travelling. One slight disadvantage is that they do not really provide a quiet retreat for your dog as they are open on all sides. This can be easily solved by placing a blanket over the cage.

Another type to consider is the increasingly popular soft dog cage. They are durable but may cause a problem if your dog is a chewer or is going to get much bigger than his current size. They look cute, often come in bright colors and are more ideal for the smaller breeds of dog.

The next type is the wicker dog cage, which is one of my favorites. It will often blend in with the furniture at home and so is ideal if you plan on keeping the cage indoors. As with the soft type of cage, these types are best suited to small dogs.

The most common type of cage used for transporting dogs is the plastic dog cage, which has a door at the front and air vents on the top and along the sides. These types are often a little more expensive than the other models available. Therefore, it is worthwhile buying one that is also an airline approved carrier, in case you decide to travel by air at a later date. I would advise this type of cage over the wire variety for travelling in a car.

When finally going out and buying your new dog cage you also need to consider the size of your dog, his tendencies and habits. If you have a large dog or one that is a chewer, especially if he is going to spend a lot of time in the cage, I would recommend a plastic one.

No matter which cage you decide to purchase, this is going to be your dogs new home. As such it should be a cage that provides him with security and a quiet place that he can rest.

Puppy Training Tips From The Pros

By Thomas Clancy

A new puppy brings to mind lots of wrestling, romping, and playing with an energetic ball of fur. It also makes people think of chewing, jumping, and little messes about the house that need to be cleaned up. Training a puppy takes time and lots of patience. Being repetitious in your actions and reinforcing good behavior is going to be the quickest way to teach this little guy the proper way to behave. The puppy training tips listed below should help you get started.

Housebreaking: This is probably the most trying form of puppy training that will take place. There is a lot of one on one time needed to make this process as effective as it can be. People who are able to monitor their puppy all day long will use the method of watching for when the pup's nose goes to the ground.

This generally means he is searching for a place to go to the bathroom. As soon as the pup looks like he is looking for a good spot to relieve himself, pick him up and take him outside. Remain outside until he does his business and praise him after he is finished.

When people aren't able to watch their puppy all the time and this method is sometimes used at night as well, a crate can be used to contain the pup. This isn't used for punishment, but as a place for the puppy to remain for an hour or two at a time.

Dogs don't usually make a mess where they sleep, so this area should be relatively safe from being used as a bathroom facility. Taking the puppy out of the crate every hour to go to the bathroom outside is often very effective. It's a good idea to not leave him in the crate for longer than two hours at a time. Once he's done his business outside, then he can romp around the house for a bit before he is placed back in the kennel.

Chewing: Puppies enjoy trying out their new teeth on a number of items, they don't necessarily know the difference between their toys and your shoes. This may take some time for him to figure out. Having a variety of toys placed around the house will make this type of training easier. If you catch the pup chewing on something he isn't supposed to be chewing, then tell him no as you take it away from him. Be sure to give him one of his own toys after you've taken the other item away.

Excessive chewing usually means that his gums are feeling a bit sore. A great remedy for sore puppy gums is by providing a sock with crushed ice in it. This can be placed in the freezer when he isn't using it.

Having a routine to housebreaking and consistency to monitoring chewing are going to make these puppy training tips more effective. This will may be a very trying process for most new dog owners, but having a well-behaved puppy will make life less complicated for both owner and puppy.

Finding A Good Dog Obedience School

By Joan Sebastien

An increasing amount of dog owners apparently prefer training schools, over the do-it-yourself strategy. Dog training schools can be quite costly. Nevertheless, should you lack the essential experience, or time to dedicate to this particular task, these types of schools can be found to carry out almost everything for you.

Training schools for most dogs have begun appearing throughout nearly every town over North America and also Europe. Adding quite a bit of hype as well as pitch to their claims, many actually offer you all your money back if they don't do well. Some of these schools may be the sole option for pet owners, whose lack of experience leaves them no other solution.

Many pet owners declare that the money charged by those schools is substantial and unjustified. Nevertheless, when you take an instant to consider the actual costs, such as foodstuff, supplies, and training location, you would soon come to fully grasp not all the charges go into their wallets. There are substantial expenses, not to mention the job salaries for experienced dog handlers. Considering that a background check is conducted on the instructor, exactly what better location is there for your dog to find out to behave?

Prepare yourself to face the effects of taking your pet dog to training school. Certain dogs may come to feel the strain piling up and act accordingly. Provide your self with a bag in addition to a scoop, seeing as these will be the most usual symptoms involving anxiety. Maintain your dog on a lead, and look out for just what interests him or her and what doesn't. It is likely they might not like a number their fellow schoolmates a lot and would like to take action.

Ultimately, never pass on a bad attitude toward the animal, attempt to relax and enjoy your self and the dog should probably do precisely the same. Always keep your pet amused by drawing their focus towards you, at least until he or she has had a chance to become familiar with the atmosphere.

With fresh legislation coming forth with regards to public behavior regarding dogs, training classes are generally the final and only resource for many pet owners. For dog breeds for instance Boxer, or the Pit Bull, dog keepers would want to place extra care on their training in order to save their dog from being put down by the local authorities should something terrible happen.
