Dog Behavioral Problems - 4 Easy Tips

By James M. Hussey

Sometimes, even the best dogs can act out, and if you're facing dog behavioral problems, it's advisable to act as quickly if possible. If bad dog behavior is allowed to continue, you may end up with a major issues on your hands. Luckily for you, there are a plethora of no-brainer ways to adjust dog behavior issues in a humane and patient way.

Dog behavioral problems can vary from cute, but annoying little problems, to full on threatening issues such as biting. Though there are many causes of behavioral problems, the solutions are pretty consistent. The old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," isn't an excuse and with consistent training, you can address dog behavior problems. Let's look at 4 user-friendly dog training tips.

1. Be Consistent. This is the absolute piece of advice when training any animal. You may be tempted to let them slide every once in awhile, but this will only serve to hinder your training. Keep giving your dog rewards as well as with corrections and your pet will begin to realize that you are absolutely the pack leader.

2. A System of Reward is Non-Negotiable. While many older dog training techniques, like putting your dog's nose in their mess, may appear initially effective, they may actually produce more problems later on. Building up and praising your dog helps your dog associate good behavior with positive results, and is a very effective means of addressing even the toughest dog behavior problems.

In brief, positive reinforcement means that you reward a dog when he or she does what you are training him or her to do, and hold back the reward when they don't. Even the most stubborn pet will begin to respond to these methods, when they are applied consistently.

3. Get a Crate. One of the simplest ways to put an end to destructive behavior is to create clear cut boundaries. Crating them while you are gone, or when you just want some space is an effective and humane training aid. You may need to introduce them to the crate slowly, and grant them time to get used to being confined. The key is to be consistent and reward them for adjusting to time spent in their crate. A crate should never be used as a punishment, only as a safe place for them to go and relax.

4. An additional cautionary note for you and especially your immediate family members. Once the dog behavioral problems are addressed, and the corrective training has started, it is imperative everyone addressing the dog use the very same training techniques. Everyone must be consistent in the training of the dog. If not, your poor pet will become very frustrated and may act out even worse than before the corrective training was initatied.

Once you have these methods in place, you can easily begin to solve dog behavioral issues without undue stress to you or your pet. A well behaved pet is a happy pet and you'll appreciate the lack of destructive and potentially harmful dog behavioral problems.

Stop Your Puppy From Biting - 7 Golden Rules

By Hannah Clapham

How to teach a puppy not to bite is one of the first behaviours you will want to manage in your new puppy. If not prevented early on, this type of biting can eventually develop in an adult dog into a situation when someone could end up injured.

Stay Consistent

It is important that everyone trains the puppy in the same way. Teach your children to treat your puppy exactly as you do. Biting is a natural act in a puppy. It is natural for them to bite their litter mates as an act of playing and so they will want to do exactly the same with you or you children.

Act Like A Puppy

Understanding how they behave in the litter makes it much easier to stop them. One of their litter mates yelping will cause them to stop, so any time he nibbles on your fingers all you have to do is yelp just like him. He will stop biting and then you can just move your hand away. Don't play with him for a while after he bit you. Use praise and treats when you are playing and he doesn't bite at all.

Keep It Short

It's important that your training sessions don't go on for too long. Puppies don't have a long attention span. Do keep the training positive and your voice happy. Give lots of praise. Pet the puppy when he pays attention to what you are saying.

Give your Puppy Lots Of Toys

Whenever you are working on the way to train a new puppy not to bite make certain the puppy is provided with toys to bite and chew on. Should your dog bites your hand say ouch or yelp. Stay consistent in this. Should your puppy backs off let him know this pleases you.

Provide Lots Of Love And Attention

Your puppy naturally requires lots of love and attention. Loads of play time with the right toys is also important. Puppies like texture. It's a good idea therefore to keep plenty of different types of toys on hand. He will pick his favourite one. Use that one when you are teaching him not to bite.

Avoid Giving Your Puppy Old Shoes And Clothes

Nonetheless, do not provide your old boots and shoes or clothes to the puppy to have fun with. He has no understanding what is new and what is not. He might believe this indicates it is Acceptable to chew up all your clothing and footwear. Puppies can become confused very easily. He needs to realize that your things are not his playthings.

Stick To The Routine

Ensure everybody sticks with the program. Don't have the kids let your puppy nip or hurt them in play, this will confuse your puppy. Teach them to yelp and stop playing too. Make sure your puppy is provided rewards for good behaviour and not for bad.

Remember, it is a natural thing for puppies to bite and nip at their playmates so it takes a little time to unlearn the behaviour. No one would like a dog who is aggressive towards anyone so it is really worth putting into practice these instructions on the best way to teach a puppy not to bite.

Do You Have An Aggressive Dog? Things You Should Do

By Carl Covason

One of the hardest problems some dog owners face is when they have an aggressive dog. Not only is it hard to be around an aggressive dog but it can be dangerous as well.

The first step to correcting aggressive behavior in dogs is to figure out what sets them off.

Is he showing dog on dog aggression?

If your dog is showing dog on dog aggression then one of the ways to relieve this problem is by making sure your dog's attention is not on the dog he is passing.

If you have done any dog training with your dog you might be familiar with the watch me command. Basically what it is, is when you say watch me to your dog they need to be looking you in the eye.

When you are able to get your dog to give you their full attention then you stand a great chance that they will proceed by the other dog without being aggressive.

You also need to make sure your dog is not looking directly in the other dogs eyes. When dogs make direct eye contact they are issuing a challenge on who the leader is out of the two. When both dogs think they are the stronger leader that's when dog on dog aggression comes out to play.

Another form of aggression in dogs is when they are eating their food or chewing on a bone. Some dogs can get very territorial and mean when food is in front of them. If your dog gets aggressive when he eats then you have to be very careful if you have children around.

One of the ways to help get rid of food aggression in dogs is to make sure that they do not get feed until everyone else in the house has finished eating their meals. This will show your dog that you are the head of the pack and help you gain his respect which is needed if you are going to be able to train your dog not to be aggressive.

How To Discourage Your Dog's Territorial Aggression

By Brian Westfall

Canines are hardwired to protect their territory from intruders. In most cases, they communicate a warning to others by barking; it's a form of intimidation. If a trespasser fails to heed the warning, your pooch's barking might turn into pacing and growling as if he is preparing for a physical confrontation. If the trespasser still refuses to leave, the pacing and growling may evolve into an attack.

If your pooch shows signs of territorial aggression, it is important to begin discouraging the behavior as soon as possible. Otherwise, your visitors' safety might be at risk. This article will provide several tips you can use to discourage your dog from behaving aggressively over his territory.

Before Training Begins

There are a few medical conditions that can influence your canine's tendency to act aggressively toward others. For example, hypothyroidism causes a deficiency of thyroid hormones and can lead to his feeling overly-anxious. If he becomes agitated enough, his anxiety can potentially prompt an attack.

You should also take precautions to ensure that you and your dog will not be interrupted by strangers during your training sessions. Close and lock your gates, especially if you're training him off-leash.

Action Steps To Curb Aggressive Behavior

First, make sure your canine receives at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. That will help prevent pent-up energy from contributing to his anxiety or aggression.

Second, devote time each day to training your dog to respond to your single-word commands. Many professional trainers recommend a program that includes two or three short sessions (5 minutes per session is sufficient) each day. Whenever your canine successfully responds to your commands, provide a food treat.

In addition to these training sessions, make your pooch work for everything he desires. For example, require him to sit before serving him meals or giving him attention. Over time, your canine will learn that if he wants something, he must follow your commands to acquire it.

One of the challenges owners have with canines that are territorially aggressive is that their dogs often try to usurp the role of leader. This can be due to several factors, including a laxity toward actively curbing the aggressive behavior. To that end, it may be necessary to place a head halter on your pooch in situations that might provoke his aggression.

For example, if you're expecting visitors with whom your dog is unfamiliar, a head halter will gently encourage him to submit to your authority. That gives your pooch an opportunity to meet new people, and be rewarded (with treats) for staying calm when others trespass on "his" territory.

The suggestions above are effective for canines whose territorial aggression is based on dominance. If the aggressive behavior is triggered by a fear-based mechanism, a modified approach including desensitization and counter conditioning is necessary. Training in such cases is focused on reducing a dog's level of fear and changing the manner in which he perceives a potential threat. We'll address those training issues in an upcoming article.

Train Your Dog At Home

By Adrian Logan

In the past, nearly every dog owner relied on home dog training to get their dog to obey and perform tricks. This was in the days before obedience classes were popular, or even available.

Pet owners who wanted a well behaved dog really had no choice but to spend time teaching Fido at home, and had to have the patience, willpower, and desire to do so. Many people learned how to train their dogs from their parents who had owned dogs, while others used instructions found in dog training books.

You can either train your dog through dog obedience classes or conduct home dog training just as your ancestors did. If you are low in budget, conducting home training is a better choice.

Dogs are easy to train. You just need to use a mixture of consistency, praise, and treats. Give them enough of those, and they'll be doing whatever you want in no time. They will obey you and perform nice tricks to impress your friends.

The easiest way to conduct dog training is to model the behavior you desire your dog to do. Let's say you want him to sit on command, then gently place him in a sitting position and say "sit" very firmly. Look into your dog eyes while doing it.

Continue to do it for many times and eventually your dog will be able to sit upon your command. When your dog does correctly, remember to give him a treat and praise him. If he still cannot do it properly, continue to do the training and your dog will one day able to obey your command.

Some dogs can learn the tricks quite fast while some take a bit more time. But the good things is they will get it one day.

Be sure to keep praising and giving treats for the first several times your dog does the right thing on command. This is important. After a while, you can forego the treats but continue to praise your dog. Your dog need to know whether are you happy with him.

Have a Dog? Help Him to be Your True Best Friend

By Michelle Robert

Dogs have been a part of my life for well over 35 years, and what a roller coaster it has been! There have been great experiences and some sad ones, but through it all, I remain convinced that dogs are truly "man's best friend". That being said, some dogs are just easier to make friends with than others.

With our current dog, an eight year old miniature schnauzer, we have definitely faced a few challenges. Within a short time of him coming into our lives, we discovered that, while a smart and loving little guy, he also:

1. Growled and jumped on anyone who came to visit, and barked at absolutely everything he saw.

2. Absolutely hated going to the groomers to get clipped.

So what could be done to help him...and us? Well we did some research, and spoke with our veterinarian to learn some techniques and strategies to help him become a "good friend". This article will discuss what we learned.

1. The barking/growling/jumping issue took some time because schnauzers, like all good little terriers are territorial, and are adamant about protecting that territory. Still, we could not scare away everyone who came to visit. So we tried all kinds of reward systems, squirting water, coins in a can, newspaper, just about everything. Nothing really worked. Finally our vet suggested a remote training collar, and after a lot more research, we tried the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer. One of the first things that we liked about it was that it has 9 stimulation levels so that we could start with the very lowest one first until we found the lowest one that was effective. It also has a tone-only training option providing more versatility. And we actually got the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, 300 yds., which has a 300 yard range, allowing us to train from a distance. The best thing about the Innotek Ultrasmart? It worked. Within a short period of time our little guy learned good manners and our friends were no longer afraid to come visit us.

2. Now the problem of our dog being stressed by going to the groomers was really more an issue of training us as opposed to him. We decided that by learning to clip him each month at home, we could be done with the process much quicker, and he would be more comfortable, and happier as a result. So we invested in the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper, and have to honestly say that doing so has made such a difference in his life...and ours. We chose these clippers because Oster has a reputation for lasting forever, and we didn't want to buy new ones each year. Plus, the reviews on them stated that they did a quiet, smooth, and quick job, which was just what we wanted. The Oster A5 Turbo Clipper has worked out great for us, with the only slight glitch being that the clippers can get warm, but we easily solved this by cleaning and changing the blades, and using Oster Kool Lube. They are really very easy to use, the challenge for us was just learning to get the cut right! But happily, all the challenges in grooming our little guy each month have completely vanished, and the process is now actually smooth and stress-free for all of us.

Having a dog can, and should be a joy, but it often takes a little work to get to that point. In our case, we had a little help from the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, and the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper. But the investment and time we took to use these tools to help make life with our dog better for us and for him have been so worthwhile. The reward has been a merry, little schnauzer whose intelligence, loving nature, and desire to please truly make him our best friend!

Kingdom Of Pets Review

By Brock Davis

One of the best dog training programs that is currently available online today is the high aclaimed Kingdom of Pets dog training guides. It is one of the most downloaded guide.

I can proudly say that I have learned so much more from this guide than the many books that I have even bought on dog training. The creator of this guide has taken extra care to ensure it is totally complete and nothing is left out. I am sure you will be impressed with what is inside.

It was designed to be the one of the best; if not the best dog training programs there are available on the internet.

What are the pro's of the kingdom of pet's dog training programme?

Pros

* Very detailed
* Leaves nothing to be desired
* Lots of tips and tricks

Cons

* No videos

It is quite possibly the most detailed course I have ever encountered and I myself am a dog trainer. For anyone that wants to train their dog this programme is a good starting point. I'm sure you won't be let down by it.

If you like knowing everything about dog training this course is a good start and a good beginning. Now to say I'm a dog trainer and then rant and rave about another dog training programme is only because I thought it was a very enjoyable read and by the end of reading I had nothing more to desire of reading.

You may have tried different ways to train your dog. In this course, as already mentioned there is little left out if anything at all. I can assure you that it's a very enjoyable read and would be happy for another person to know exactly what it has to offer. Although it is not free, it still has made much more of an impression than any other program book or course I have seen.

Why Training Your Dog Is Important?

By David E. Broadhead

One of the most critical aspects that pertain to adopting a dog is training. Your dog can be given the right training either in formal coaching classes or at home. But there are some people who stay away from administering proper training to their dogs. This is because many people feel that the dog is a member of the family and does not require any training. But what people don't realize is that depriving the dog of correct coaching will not do your pet any good.

In contrast to popular belief, training your dog will not transform into him into a robotically obedient pet following your commands mindlessly. It will also not turn him into a trifling showpiece that spends his time doing tricks in front of visitors to the house. Canine obedience training can however ; strengthen the dogs' relationship with you while making sure he gets as much joy out of life as he gives to you.

Coaching is essential for dogs of every breed and size irrespective of the original purpose for him being changed into a household. Radical training will help your dog understand how to react in different scenarios and also make them acquainted with various social circumstances that they may encounter with differing kinds of people.

A correctly trained dog also makes your life more relaxed and happy. It does not tear down your furniture, eat your shoes or lick your dinner plates when you turn your back. Moreover, it doesn't jump over your visitors, but rather after barking to alert you that somebody is at the door obeys your command to sit. Your trained dog regularly becomes a reason of pride, instead of being a source of continuous botheration.

You may also save your dog from assorted potential dangers by giving it the satisfactory training. A correctly trained dog can be simply recalled in case it rambles away anywhere. If your dog is lost or wanders away he is probably going to come across numerous dangers. Proper training will help him deal with such risks successfully. Also, the probabilities of a properly trained dog getting lost are sleek. Further on, training can help your dog deal with high pressure scenarios successfully.

Training can improve the quality of life of your dog to a great degree. Training teaches your dog the easy way to behave in human company and the make the companionship pleasurable. Sine you and the dog enjoy one another's company, the entire experience becomes delightful rather than being a nuisance. Since your dog behaves as per your wishes, he adds to his own happiness as well.

To conclude, you should help your dog to be a good canine citizen by giving it correct training without reference to the time and money the endeavor might entail. Your investment will actually pay out in due course.

Tips for Using a Dog Training Shock Collar

By Anita L. Platt

A dog training shock collar can be used for all types of dogs, no matter what kind of temperament they have or which breed they are. You can use the shock collar to help your dog learn what behaviors you expect from them, and to eliminate problem behaviors. There are a few things that you can do to get great results, with consistency being one of the most important among these.

Using a dog training shock collar is an excellent way to teach your dog to behave, but it is important to use this method consistently to help teach your dog which behaviors are acceptable. A shock collar isn't painful, but is unpleasant for your pet. You can imagine the feeling that you pet experiences by remembering the last time that you touched a doorknob and received a small electric shock.

The method that you choose should always be used consistently. For example, if you have chosen to use a dog training shock collar for eliminating problem behavior, such as excessive barking, then you need to make sure that you use the collar each and every time that the dog exhibits the behavior.

The dog training shock collar works based on conditioning. Your dog will quickly learn to associate the unpleasant shock sensation with the behavior that he is being punished for. By using this method consistently, you will be able to control your dog easily.

When you choose a dog training shock collar, you will find that the remote for the collar has several different settings. Most dogs respond well to the lowest settings, although in some circumstances you may find that the dog will not respond to the lowest setting.

There are several different types of collars, but the most convenient dog training shock collar is controlled remotely. This will allow you to train your dog within the confines of his pen or in your lawn, without having to keep the dog on a leash throughout the process.

It is important to use the collar consistently, and to leave the collar on for an extended time. You may want to purchase a similar collar if you are planning on removing the dog training shock collar during the training process, so that your dog won't become unwilling to train.

Once you have fully trained your dog, you will want to continue using a similar collar so that the dog is accustomed to the feel of the dog training shock collar. You may also consider using the training collar for an extended time to help train your dog in new situations.

Creating the Dog You Want

By Billy Matts

The perfect dog is not made by magic. Balance of respect and trust are what creates the perfect dog. "what ifs" become a thing of the past with unconditional trust and respect, such as "what if someone is bitten by my dog" or "what if the dog runs away". All of which are based on a lack of trust between dog and human, made when the humans understands dogs and their way.

Basic principles of achieving trust and respect involve the following: The walk - the walk is the deciding factor in how healthy your relationship is with your dog. It is the time when trust and respect is earned, both ways.

Leading the walk involves setting the arrangement of the followers. The followers seek the leaders support when deciding which position to be in, in front, next to, or behind. An easy method involves putting a leash on your dog, and shortening it to allow your dog to stay next to or behind you, not pulling. This means you are playing the role of the leader by setting the position. There should be no stress on the leash, especially from your side. Once you start to lead the walk your dog will get the point and will give you respect.

If you find that tension occurs on the leash during the walk, one of two things is occurring. One, you are not projecting leadership and confidence enough, perhaps you are frustrated or in a rush, are you holding your arm in a relaxed manner so that you are not transmitting stress down the leash? Give trust by trusting your dog will not pull or misbehave and give respect by respecting their needs for discipline and structure, particularly on the walk.

Loving your dog is one thing, but if your dog misbehaves or acts up on the walk, maybe you should try and give another kind of love. Love to dogs means structure and work beforehand. Consistent rules such as when to leave for walking, when to awaken, when to play, the leader sets all of these rules and it results in a healthier relationship wherein the dog understands the love you are giving.

Proper Dog Training Can Start Even Before Birth

By Adriana Noton

One of the things that really angers most dog lovers is when they see an animal whose dog training has clearly been neglected. While some people may think dog training oppresses their animals, in fact it's just the opposite. A truly loving pet owner will see that his or her animal gets the best training possible.

Skeptics might think this is nonsense, but recent research shows otherwise. Thanks to ultrasound machines, which can take pictures of puppies in their mother's womb, researchers have found that puppies will respond to touch or pressure on their mother's abdomen as early as four weeks into pregnancy. This amazing discovery has shown that petting a pregnant dog will produce a litter of puppies that are more docile and have a well-developed sense of touch. This in turn helps with relaxation, emotional attachment and most importantly, socialization with people, according to dog experts.

About three weeks after they're born, puppies entertain into a behavioral period known as socialization. Between three and 12 weeks, the main task of puppies is social play. The investigate, they "play-fight, " and they mimic sexual behaviors. Their subsequent behavior is shaped by the puppies interaction with their mother and littermates.

Eventually, however, as you learned the local language you will be able to have a happier, more fulfilling life there. The same is true of dogs that live as pets in a human environment. Through obedience training a dog learns how to associate behaviors with certain human sounds. Saying "sit" to a trained dog always results in the dog sitting. Saying "stay" keeps the dog in one place, and saying "come" brings the dog to its owner. With proper puppy training, both the owner and the dog develop a mutual understanding that each can trust in their relationship.

The best thing a dog owner can do for his or her pet is to start their dog on obedience training as early as possible. The age to start obedience training may vary with the puppy's personality. Just like human beings, some pups are mature enough at 10 weeks to start training, while others may not be ready until 12 or 15 weeks. If an owner finds after a couple of weeks' classes that his or her puppy isn't responding, it's probably best to suspend obedience training and start again in another month or so.

Dog training for obedience involves the owner and puppy learning a series of basic commands. Among these are "sit, " "stay, " "down, " "come, " "heel, " "drop it" and "leave it." In most cases, these commands are taught with the use of food rewards such as dog food, tiny dog biscuits or small pieces of appropriate human food such as string cheese or baked or boiled chicken. Each of these commands is intended to teach a certain posture to the dog that the owner can use to control its behavior.

If a puppy is properly settled into a home, basic dog training, also known as obedience training, can begin in earnest around 12 weeks, or after a puppy has had all its vaccinations. By this time, a puppy that has been correctly socialized is ready to begin learning how to behave appropriately by following its owner's instructions.

Dog training classes available through pet stores, kennels and independent dog trainers can aid a puppy and its owner in developing good communication and a mutual trust relationship. By knowing how it's expected to behave according to basic commands, a puppy will grow up into a dog that's friendly to other people and dogs, obedient to its owners' instructions, and most of all, a loving and loyal family pet for many years.

Effective Dog Obedience Training in Less Than Seven Days

By John Henderson

One of the challenging responsibilities that a dog owner faces is to be able to implement a program on dog training in the shortest amount time possible. This is necessary to be able to achieve the desired dog behavior without going through a very rigid and time-consuming process. Some dog owners spend too much time on puppy training because of ineffective strategies based on hunches and myths. The best approach for effective dog training program is to go through a systematic approach that can provide results in less than a week. The only way to do this is to follow a step-by-step approach that will guide you through the dog obedience and behavior training with defined goals and behavior changes.

Step-by-step approaches for dog training in just a matter of days can be implemented in any of two approaches.

Approach 1 - Use the Net as source of program.

You can easily check on available programs from the Net that you can implement for your obedience program. By passing time in getting the right sites as source of info, you can get the program you need but you would possibly not be certain to get a program that may generate fast results. Training Dog to Walk on a Leash

By Jim Witt

It can be difficult for a dog to learn to walk at our pace because they walk at such a quicker speed than us. Dog's are naturally curious animals and want to go explore. It is up to the owner to help them learn to walk on a leash without pulling you around.

It is important to begin your training with authority. Never be cruel to your dog to establish your authority. By building a good relationship with your dog, you will be able to really help with the training process.

When teaching your dog to use a leash, there are different techniques you can use. The most popular technique is to give a fast snap on the leash whenever your dog decides to pull against the leash. Stop walking with the animal until he stops pulling, and then positively reinforce him every time he lets the leash have any slack.

Be sure to get a good training collar. Find one that works well for training, such as a nylon dog collar that won't slip off. Be careful when using a standard choke collar, since these can cause a lot of damage to your dog's vocal chords if use improperly.

Find a quality dog leash. Find a dog leash that is comfortable, especially for your grip. The best-sized leashes are usually 4 to 6 feet long.

Train with your dog by having him sit on your left side, with both of you looking in the same direction. Start walking with your left food. If you use your left foot every time you start to walk this will signal to your dog that you are about to walk.

Walk at your normal pace. Your dog needs to get use to your speed. Talk to your dog and make it fun so she wants to walk with you and not just explore on her own.

Walk a short distance and then stop walking. Praise your dog and tell him what a wonderful job he has done with walking with the leash. Practice this a few times a day. Keep it fun and your dog will be trained in no time.

You wake up a 6 am with a smile on your face. You have a whole hour to yourself to get ready for work before you have to wake the kids up. You go about your morning quietly humming to yourself as you make your pot of coffee. The aroma is filling the house and you can't help but think how lucky you are.

You happen to notice that your neighbor is taking their little brown dog out for a walk. Your thinking how nice to be out so early for some fresh air and a bit of exercise. Then out of nowhere your dog comes pounding through the kitchen and to the window. The hair on his back is raised and he lets out a low growl. Before you can get to him he is in full fled barking mode and there is nothing you can do to prevent him from waking up the whole house.

As your trying desperately to quite him the baby starts wailing, and the kids are groggily coming out of their bedrooms. In exasperation you look on at your kids because you know that within five minutes your house will be in full swing and you have not even had your first cup of coffee, let alone read the paper or gotten ready for work. As you step through the door yourself your dog comes flying at you because he missed you so much. You nearly escape hitting the ground with your dog on top of you. The Ideal Dog Training With 4 To 8 Jumps

By Martin Elmer

So how many jumps should you start with? Well, when practicing agility you can never have too many single jumps. But we do not recommend less than four jumps as a beginning point for good agility training.

With four jumps you can learn your dog a lot of different skills, exercises and drills. With this number of jumps you can work on jump grid and short jump chute. It is also possible to setup a "box", so you can practice collection, handling and 270 degree jumps.

You can learn your dog to jump left and right. You can handle it from the inside the box or you can be outside and send your dog. Or you can setup the jumps in a horizontal line to practice treadles and serpentines.

The next step in the training is eight jumps. Here you can setup two boxes and one opening jump. Now you have multiplied the maneuvers that you can train with your dog. The jump grids can be of suggested size and number of jumps.

Another variation is to setup the jumps in a circle with jump bars vertical to the circle or on the edge of the circle. This variation can teach the dog a lot of new skills.

Your next consideration is a double jump and a triple jump. You could set two or three single jumps together to make your expanded jump, but having double and triple jump in your course work is really valuable to practice. We've seen many dogs run a clean course and the last obstacle is a triple and the dog is not prepared for it, and bang, down comes the bar.

If you really want to be ahead of the pack, you should have two sets up eight jumps. Because you can keep the jump grip at all times, it is the ultimate in training. The jumps can be separated from the course work. And when you then includes your double and triple jumps, it is possible the practice all the jumping drills and skills to get the "Qs".
