Tips for Successful Dog Puppy Training

By Amy Williams

If you decided to have a pet dog at home, you should know that there are certain responsibilities that a pet owner is required to do. It is not enough that you give your pet food, home, and other necessities. It is equally important for your pet to undergo dog puppy training. You do not need to hire a professional to do this because you can do this by yourself at home with a few simple tips. Read on to learn more.

* Keep in mind that physically hitting a puppy will not get you anywhere. It is important that you get respect from your dog but it is just as important that you earn it by respecting your pet as well. Doing this is very critical in the relationship building process. Hitting a dog will only cause fear, and a scared dog is not a good thing. You should have strict and consistent rules.

Another dog puppy training suggestion is to make sure you give your dog some kind of reward whenever he performs correctly. This can be done by giving him treats and praise in an encouraging tone from your voice. This will give the dog something to look forward to whenever he does something right.

* Do not treat your dogs like toys. Some people subconsciously treat their dogs like cute stuffed animals because they are cuddly and cute. Your pets are not there to be hugged and displayed. Like humans, dogs need attention and they also have needs that you as a pet owner, should fulfill. They also have moods and unique personalities.

Proper dog puppy training is the key to a happy and harmonious relationship between man and animal living under the same roof.

Your Judgements Could Be Hurting Your Animals' Feelings

By James French

Animal communication can be a great benefit to all pet owners. The ability to understand your animals feelings and perspective on life will help you create well balanced and happy animals. It can be very easy to observe our animals behaviour and to place our own judgements on why they behave the way they do, but what happens if you are wrong? Animal communication is a way of truly understanding and getting closer to your animal.

It is very easy for us humans to place negative feelings on to our animals. I am sure that you will agree with me that it is a horrible feeling when some one makes false judgements about us. So why is it any different when we do the same to our animals!

In one of my sessions I was helping a client who had made one of these judgements about her dog. She had labelled her dog as being a bully. This conclusion was made because her dog was showing friendly signs to younger and gentle dogs but when she got close to them she would turn and snap at them with an aggressive force.

Her behaviour was completely different to nervous or protective dogs where she would leave them well alone.

Using animal communication it became very clear that her dog was desperate to be sociable with other dogs. The reason for the aggression was that she was afraid of the intimacy. Now it became clear why she was approaching the younger and gentle dogs. She was also very sensitive to other dogs feelings and this is why she did not want anything to do with nervous or protective dogs.

Her wanting to be close to dogs changed as soon as she got to close to them as an overwhelming feeling of shyness and protection took over her.

With this new insight and information it allowed us to create a whole new approach in helping her dog. We focused on keeping her relaxed and very slowly closed the gap between her and other dogs, giving her the time to overcome her shyness. Because she was so desperate to be close to other dogs this made the process easy as everyone was after a common goal.

When we connect with our animals and understand them it gives us the power to start helping them. If you are constantly asking yourself why they do the things that they do then this is possibly because you have not understood them fully!

Animal communication builds a trusting relationship. It is exactly the same for humans, when we find someone who understands us then it is easy to listen to them and trust them, as we can feel that they are there to help us. Because animal communication is so natural, it is very easy for anyone to learn the skills in a relatively short period of time!

Ways To Keep Your Dog From Drowning

By Jake Friend

Estimates have the number of dogs and cats in North America at 58,000,000 and 62,000,000, respectively, and it's a painful truth that thousands of them are victims of accidental drownings annually. Due to the fact that many people do not report these drownings, there is no way to know exactly how many pets actually die this way. Although, 99 % of dogs can swim, we have a false sense of security when we see our dogs running and jumping in and out of the water at the lake or our back yard pool. A significant percentage of dogs and even some cats are only able to swim a little while before they become fatigued. With this in mind, these animals go into a panic state when they are unable to quickly find a way to get their paws on solid ground. This panic is what causes them to drown. But it is more than just a problem for pets, for loving pet parents will selflessly and without hesitation dive into a frozen lake or rapidly flowing river in an attempt to rescue their animal.

What ways can we prevent our pets from drowning? Here are a few valuable tips:

1. Never take it for granted that your dog can swim.

2. Keep a close eye on your aging pet. They cannot swim as long or as far as they once did.

3. Never throw a dog or cat in water. This will cause them to panic from the surprise.

4. Purchase a canine floatation device (CFD) or pet life jacket for your dog or cat. If they are going to be near water, put it on them. Often a pet may fall off a dock or out of a moving boat without our knowledge.

5. Solar blankets and pool covers look like solid surfaces to your pet. If your animals are around the pool, it is a good idea to remove them if possible to avoid them walking onto it.

6. Fix a pet safety gate to the entrance to the pool area.

7. Be certain that your canine and feline friends cannot easily access a neighboring pool.

8. Get a pool alarm for your pool or pond.

9. Don't let your pet play or walk near fast flowing water.

10. Make sure your pet stays away from frozen lakes and rivers.

There is a ton of guilt that comes from having to watch your pet drown, and a person can never fully recover from having to go through that experience. I highly recommend that you go out and inspect your property for any water hazards. Make your home and any vacation residences drown proof immediately, whether it's in the dead of winter or during the summer months. If your pet is going to be anywhere near water, make sure they are wearing a canine floatation device or pet life jacket.

A Safe Guide To Clipping Your Dog

By Cliff Stone

Very few people see clipping their dogs as an art form. Instead, they just tackle certain areas, such as scraggly fur on the feet, to keep their dogs from tacking in mud. In an effort to get rid of undesirable hair, however, many owners forget that clipping their dogs can actually cause damage.

When you decide to clip your dog's fur, keep his breed in mind. If you clip a longer haired breed incorrectly, dust accumulates in the coat, causing skin problems. In addition, parasites like ticks and fleas can move and breed more freely if your dog's coat isn't card for or clipped correctly.

You need to trim your dog's nails to avoid breaking, splitting, and pain while walking. That's because overlong toenails cause the nail to turn sideways, or even to dig into the foot. When a dog has claws that are too long, it becomes easy to catch them on hard surfaces or to break or split them.

Injuries also easily occur during clipping of nails. The quick of the nail will bleed it it's cut. This is the source of blood supplying the nail, as well as where the nerves are located. This keeps the nail alive and growing. However, this area is situated far back inside the nail, and will only be exposed if you cut the nail too short or if it splinters. This can be sensitive or painful.

To cut your dog's hair and nails, always use the sharpest clippers you can, and choose the right tools. Human nail clippers are wrong for dogs' nails - use ones purchased at your local pet supply store instead. There are a number of great new nail clippers out there that are made to keep pain and damage to a minimum.

If you live somewhere with a cold climate, avoid clipping your dog in winter unless you have to. The winter can put a lot of stress on your dog, particularly if your dog's coat is not long enough to protect her from the snowy weather and chilly climate. Remember that humans aren't the only ones to get frostbite.

Never cut your pet's hair too short in the summer, either. Otherwise, you could expose her skin to the harmful rays of the sun. Dogs' fur keeps them cooler in the summer as well as warm in the winter. A slight cut will be fine, but make sure you leave enough fur to protect your dog.

It's also important to avoid clipping unhealthy dogs. This can cause them stress, so clip sick pets only when absolutely necessary.

Walking your dog on concrete daily can help keep your dog's nails worn down in a more even, gradual way. This helps you avoid having to deal with clippers.

To get the best results, you'll want to talk to a professional groomer who knows how to correctly clip your dog.

How To Housetrain A Dog Using Just a Cage

By Karen Taylor

A lot of dog owners nowadays are struggling to solve housebreaking problems. While the most effective methods are humane and gentle, some pet owners will become impatient and begin to use more drastic methods - but frustration will not make training your pet any quicker.

If you are trying to teach a dog a certain behavior, you much know your pet and use methods that are appropriate for them. You could train your dog by constantly supervising it or by using a housebreaking aid like paper or a cage. You may also choose to combine the two house breaking methods.

Effective as it is, there are quite a few issues buzzing around cage training. There are people who believe that this form of training is inhumane. They feel that no matter what training you are trying to accomplish you should not use a cage on a dog. Contrary to this thought patter, cage training has been shown to be one of the most efficient and effected methods for training both dogs and puppies.

Why? First, because dogs are den dwelling creatures. For centuries dogs have been known to go to a den if they wanted warmth in cold weather or to cool of in the heat. They consider their den as their home in which they are safe from harm. Therefore a cage should feel like home for them - not a cage!

Secondly, dogs like to keep their home and bed clean and will be reluctant to soil in their cage. By confining your pet to their own den, they will learn how to control their bodily functions until the proper time presents itself. Puppies need to be taken out more often than older dogs because they have limited control of their bowels and bladder. Taking these steps will help your puppy establish a schedule for bathroom trips.

Cages come in various styles and materials. You can buy one from your local pet supply store, hardware or pet section in some department stores. When you purchase a cage for your pet, consider their needs and consider why you are buying the cage. If you travel, consider purchasing a cage made of plastic for your dog, as wire cages will not protect them from extremes of temperature. Another thing that you want to take into consideration is the size of the cage. Buying a new create when he has outgrown the old one costs a lot of money. So that is why it would wise to purchase a large crate, that way you can block the excess section so that your dog doesn't soil it, that way you can place your dog in the other half during the night for him to stay in.

It is important to be consistent when using a dog cage for housetraining. Your housebreaking issues will soon pass if you do this properly.

Best Puppy Training Secrets

By Miyagii Moto

Dogs are the most preferred pets by majority of the population ever since the beginning of history. They have proven themselves to be efficient, loyal, highly intellectual and trainable in various tasks. They can be sweet and meek to their owners but ferocious to total strangers. This makes them a perfect companion for those who are single and unattached as well as to couples who are just planning to start their own families. People from all ages can also quickly adapt to the presence of an adorable canine.

It has been said that a dog's behavior only reflect his breeding and training. Obviously, there is nothing that you can do anymore to change his breeding. However, there is still a lot you can do with his training. You can still teach new tricks. Now, if you are thinking of getting another puppy as a pet, here are some of the best-kept secrets of puppy training that you should bear in mind.

The first thing that you have to do is to make your pet feel secure in your company. Spend some quality time by playing with him after you have gotten home from your office. This process will ensure that you have established a good rapport. It's a no-no to start implementing difficult tricks that would boggle his mind because it will not lead to any learning. After making your pet comfortable, slowly impose discipline by taking away his comfortable lifestyle.

Chain him, put him in his kennel or place him inside a crate to show that you mean business. At first, they might get a little noisy and howl until the wee hours of the morning, especially if they have been previously used to a very free lifestyle. Try to be immune to this kind of suffering. Sooner or later, they will realize that all their whimpering will have no effect on you. This will inculcate the fact that you are the boss and your orders must be followed strictly down to the last letter. It won't be long before they get used to this set up and will look forward to your arrival.

Next, educate him a simple trick followed by a nice food. The reward could come in the form of a tiny chewable bone or a slice of chicken meat. Just like the classic conditioning technique by prominent psychologist Ivan Pavlov, he will learn to connect the new trick with the treat. This will stroke their attention and whet their appetite for more chow.

Third, you can go the opposite way of the second step and let your dog learn through the negative conditioning process. Instead of giving a nice reward, teach him the power of the words no, stop and don't in a strong and authoritative tone. They will distinguish that it is something significant in relation to your voice.

Fourth, you have to be consistent. When you give a reward or punishment, make sure that it is commensurate to the good task or the bad behavior. Variety is something that needs to be avoided like the plague in this situation because your dog will get confused if you can't follow through with the initial rules you have set. The same rule applies to all the people in your household including your wife and kids.

Lastly, give choices. If there are tricks or tasks that he can't easily act upon like not digging the front lawn or backyard, then provide another alternative like another digging space beside the dog house yard.

Dog Potty Training

By Paul J James

Regardless of how cute your puppy is when you bring him home, resist the temptation to delay dog potty training until later. Even very young puppies can be potty trained successfully.

A Crate

A puppy crate is a very helpful tool for dog potty training. A crate gives your dog his own "space" that he won't want to soil particularly at night. Be sure he given plenty of opportunity and encouragement to go potty before he's crated.

Choose The Right Food

You may be tempted to buy cheap dog food, but you will most likely regret it in the end. Cheap dog foods are full of fillers. Since the fillers can't be digested and processed into fuel, they pass through your dog's digestive system causing gas and creating large amounts of stool. Higher quality dog foods do not have as much filler so your dog passes much smaller stools

A Schedule

Establishing a schedule for your puppy from the beginning will go a long way toward potty training him. Feeding should be done at the same times every day followed by taking him outside to relieve himself about 15-20 minutes after he eats. He should also be given the opportunity to go outside after naps and immediately upon being removed from his crate in the morning.

Communicating

Establish words that your dog can learn to associate with relieving himself. Use that word consistently to avoid confusing him. It's also important to learn your dog's signals that he needs to go outside; restlessness, sniffing around (especially in places he may have had an accident at some point) or going to the door can all be signals that your dog needs to go.

Constant Reinforcement

When your puppy does well, praise him. Using the word he's come to associate with elimination, "good boy to go potty outside" will help him strengthen the connection between going potty and being praised.

Successful dog potty training requires patience and persistence but the pay off is well worth the effort. Well mannered dogs are a joy both to their owners and those around them.

Why Bathe Your Dog?

By Cliff Stone

Most of us have one of two opinions about bathing a dog. Some people believe you don't need to bathe dogs very often - maybe once a year. Others feel that their dogs should be bathed every month.

Bathing is good for dogs, but it can cause problems if you do it too often.

Just like us, dogs naturally have oils in their fur and skin. Bathing your dog too often will cause drying of the skin, which means itching, scratching and possible sores and injuries. Remember that the natural oils have some benefits, since they provide protection from bacteria and other elements.

If you want to make bathing fun for you and your dog, there are a few things to pay attention to.

1. It's important to provide protection for your dog's ears. Soap and water, if they get into the ear canal, can cause significant infections. This is often temporary, but infections can cause real damage, up to and including deafness. If you think your dog may have an ear infection, look for frequent head shaking and discharge from the ears to be sure.

To make sure that this doesn't occur, all you need to do is use cotton balls to stop your dog's ears. Never force these into the ear canal - just place them securely at the entrance of the ear, keeping water out. Once the bath is over, dry the ears to keep moisture out - a finger wrapped in a cloth works well. If you decide to use a cotton swab, make sure you don't put it too deeply into the ear canal, since it could damage the ear drum.

2. Use a shampoo intended for dogs. These are made to protect your pet's fur and skin. Soaps meant for people can be irritating and harsh. There's also a chance your dog will be allergic to the perfumes in human products.

3. The frequency with which you bathe your dog will depend on the breed you have. Dogs with long hair need to be washed more often than breeds that have short hair. That means that if you have a hairy breed, such as a spaniel, you may need to bathe as often as once every two months. Other breeds could go as long as eight months, but outdoor dogs will probably need more frequent bathing.

Start your dog off correctly when it comes to bathing and bathtime. Patience and compassion can be very important since a dog that's frightened will be harder to bathe. Make the process fun - the majority of dogs enjoy getting wet, after all.

If you can, set up your bath outside. Encourage your pet to run through or sit in it. Use toys to distract your dog from the water. Once he's calmed down a little, start the bath. Some people put their pets on leashes to keep them from running away.

When you bathe your pet, get the shampoo, towel, soap and other tools together early, and avoid using the hose. Water from the garden hose is usually too cold. Use a bowl with water from the bath instead - it'll be warmer.

If you teach your dog that bathing is to be enjoyed, you and your pet will enjoy the next session.

Secrets To House Training A Puppy

By Stewart Staubber

While you are going to need some stacks of newspapers to house train your puppy, other items are needed as well. Paying attention, patience, consistency and commitment are a part of it as well.

By following the steps listed below, the chances of accidents in the house will decrease. Expect your puppy and dog to have an accident occasionally. This is just part of having an inside animal.

To house train your puppy faster, be consistent. Training can last for several weeks or more so be patient.

Create a routine.

Puppies do better with regular schedules just like babies do. Setting up a schedule teaches him that there are certain times for eating, playing and going potty.

Normally, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for each month of age. If the puppy is four months old, he can hold it for about four hours. To keep accidents to a minimum, be sure to take your puppy out on regular breaks. For those who do not work from home, hiring a dog walker may be necessary.

Take your puppy outside as soon as he wakes up, after drinking or eating, and during or after playing. Also, choose a spot outside for the bathroom. Always take him to that spot while he is on a leash. Use words or phrases such as "get busy" while he is going to the bathroom. He will learn to associate these words with relieving himself.

Give your puppy praise and a reward for using the bathroom outside. This needs to be done before you come back inside.

On average, puppies eat approximately three to four times per day. Feed your puppy at the same time to help develop a regular feeding schedule and bathroom schedule.

Make it easier to get through the night by picking up his dishes about two hours before going to bed. If he does happen to wake up in the middle of the night, do not freak out. If you do he may think it is playtime. Do not play or turn on a bunch of lights. Take him outside and then go back to bed.

Manage.

Watch your puppy carefully when he is in the house so he will not have an accident.

Keep your puppy near you using a six foot leash if you are not playing with or training him. Some signs that he may need to use the bathroom include scratching at the door or barking, restlessness, circling or sniffing. If you see your puppy acting like that, take him outside immediately. After he uses the bathroom, reward him with praise or a treat.

What is it about puppies that makes them so irresistible? The first time you bring a puppy home, everyone rushes in excitement to greet their new family member. Then, when the new puppy has an "accident" on the rug, everybody seems to disappear. This is when you have to start training a puppy.

You can make training your new puppy a chore or you can make it an enjoyable experience for everyone, including your dog. All it takes is a little education about animal behavior to avoid toilet training the new member of your family the wrong way.

All animals, including ourselves, do what they do through a mixture of instinct and learned behavior. You may notice that your puppy will experience some anxiety before it relieves itself anywhere in the house. That is because dogs instinctively know that they don't want to soil their own dens, but your new puppy has just come to a new home and doesn't know where its "den" is.

On top of that, your new puppy can't "hold it in" for very long. It knows something is about to happen and will run around the room, whimpering and sniffing until finally it can't wait any longer. Punishing your puppy for this would not be appropriate, because it has done nothing wrong. Laughing it off would also be inappropriate, because it needs to be shown the right place to go or it may decide that it got it right the first time!

Do not loudly scold your puppy, hit it or rub its face in its mess. Immediately clean up the area and take the waste matter outside and put it where it belongs. Take the puppy with you and let it see and smell where its waste belongs. Then go back and clean up thoroughly. Take special care to use a cleaning solution that completely eliminates the odor, remembering that your dog has a keener sense of smell than you do.

Constant vigilance may be required at first for quick success at toilet training. Look for the signs that the puppy needs to go and take it outside before it relieves itself. Then immediately offer it a reward. In this way, your puppy will learn two valuable lessons. It will learn positive reinforcement for good behavior and it will learn that you are the leader of the pack.

Teaching the puppy who is boss is as important as toilet training itself. Dogs are pack animals, which means that they either follow the pack or lead the pack. Your puppy must know from the beginning that it is living in your home and that you are the leader of the pack. You need not be a harsh leader. In fact, benevolent leadership is a far better way to lead.

Start training a puppy early and you will have a rewarding pet for many years.

Dog Training - Teaching your Dog to be Social

By Riley Salkowski

Dogs are much like humans since they do enjoy interaction with nearly everyone. They are generally friendly and enjoy interaction with other animals, such as dogs and even reptiles. However, dogs are different as well. Some dogs are hostile even to other dogs. All dogs are different, just as all people are different.

If you are an animal lover, then you know the value of having several dogs, regardless of their species. This makes it very difficult to keep your house in order, and then you have the fact that your dogs will want to defend their territory. If you have ever seen a canine territorial conflict, then you know what a headache can be. We've all had the experience of walking the dog in the middle of the night, and watching a rival dog wander into the yard. Have you ever managed to make it back inside without the entire front of your body covered in wet grass?

There are ways to remedy this. Your dog needs to be taught social behavior as soon as humanly possible. They're like children, and as children, their minds are more susceptible to learning. You remember how easily you accepted things when you were a child, right? They have not established the line between a friend and an enemy; they're just trying to learn, and you need to take advantage of that.

When you only plan to have one dog, you need to introduce it to other dogs while it is a puppy. This helps the dog understand that not all dogs are its enemy. You also need to touch and pet the puppy in order for it to become used to being touched. This makes for a friendlier dog, while reducing the chances of biting.

Now when you have decided to introduce your puppy to other dogs, you need to make sure you keep a tight grip on their leash. Do this until you're absolutely certain they aren't going to kill each other. It sounds a little controlling, but just like children, they need to be taught the difference between right and wrong.

Many dogs at a young age like to jump, bite, or shove. This is play to them, but you need to teach them not to do this. They will do it with each other of course, but make sure that they are not hurting one another. Remember that there is nothing more annoying than trying to watch television and having your dog jumping on you every two seconds, especially if he or she is not a lap dog.

Dogs bark, it is just part of their nature; however, it can get on your nerves when they bark continually. You can teach them not to bark all the time or you may want to distract them with a dog treat. It may not work to begin with, however you should keep trying. Teach the dog that you will give it a treat if it will stop barking. The dog will learn only to bark when necessary, when you use this method repeatedly.

Train a puppy or dog to be quiet by placing the animal on its back and then yell into his or her face. It does not look so pleasing to others; however, it is a good working method many professional dog trainers use to train a puppy or dog to be quiet. This method works well with rescue animals as well to help teach him or her to be quiet.

Just remember to train your dog as early as possible. Trained properly he or she can be a worthy companion and friend for years to come. Keep this in mind next time you decide to raise a four legged companion.

Puppy Training Tips On Effective Crate Training

By Geraldine Dimarco

Want to hear something crazy? People need vacations. Have you ever had a crazy day wherein you simply wanted to leave everything and spend some time alone to revive yourself? You probably have a boss who begrudgingly gives you only the weekends to relax. What if one day he decides to personally plan a vacation for you, will that help you appreciate him? Don't you agree that retreats actually help the person live a fuller and a more stress-free life?

Canines operate in a similar fashion. They need to find a secure place to nest in once in a while. It is a deeply primal instinct that goes back several decades, even centuries. A masters responsibility is to lead them into things that we know are good for their well-being. This is an article that aims to do just that with puppy training tips on the often misunderstood but terribly useful crate training.

At first I thought crate training a puppy must be this cruel method of torture inflicted on disobedient pups. Its not. Wouldn't you know-- it is actually a very helpful and friendly method of training dogs. Canines are not keen on sleeping in a place he already soiled. A crate trained puppy then would keep from eliminating until you let him out of his area; so release him to potty when he has spent sufficient time inside the crate. Make sure the said space is not big enough to have space between his sleeping and toilet area.

Put the enclosure in a room where people gather together. Do not rush the puppy into the whole process; it can be traumatic when done incorrectly. Place his favorite treats and things in and begin to feed him inside the crate. This is your puppy's special place and you want him to associate the crate with happy and pleasant things. Never use this as a form of punishment.

Now the puppy is already accustomed to being inside the crate, close the enclosure for a few minutes at a time. Make sure he hears you and knows you are still in the room. If he gets upset for no pressing reason, do not let him out until he quiets down. If you do, he will use crying to get what he wants in the future.

The next step is getting the puppy so comfortable inside the crate he won't mind being there alone. Keep his play things inside to occupy him. When you feel the time is right, leave the room for a short period of time and gradually increase it. If you need to leave the house, do not go away for more than four hours. Puppies have not fully developed their bodily functions as well as an adult dog.

These are few puppy training tips that when followed, will do so much to increase your leisure time significantly. Crate training aids potty and sleeping habits without much hard work. Sounds good right? You also have the freedom to take longer trips and vacations without undue stress of worrying about your puppy. For times you need space you can leave him be. The dog will be happy in his own world and you in yours. When you are successful in crate training a puppy-- your former lifestyle will be as forgotten as a buried bone.

Use Agility To Build Confidence In Your Dog

By Martin Elmer

Is your dog timid around people or other dogs? Is your dog sensitive to sounds? Agility training can provide the environment and structure to build confidence in your dog. Agility classes are a great place for people to learn about the sport and learn how to train, but the timid dog may take a long time before he is ready to venture from under your chair or off your lap.

A shy dog can only learn when it is inside its comfort zone. So all training must start where it feels safe, and all learning must be done in small increments. The best place for training and learning is probably the home.

So, how do you train at home? You will need guidelines and equipment. There is a multitude of websites that can give you information on agility training. There are also books and videos that will give details and visual aids and lesson plans for beginners thru expert levels.

You can find a lot of equipment that is helpful and useful to have at home for dog training. All the equipment recommendations are based on location of training and the available space. Do you e.g. have a large yard with room for 10 obstacles? Or do you only have a small yard, so you have to tear down the equipment before you can setup something else up? Will the training be in the basement or garage; or maybe in the living room?

When you are training a timid dog the equipment has to be sturdy and safe. A pause table is a good starting point for dog training. Buy a 12" high pause table, which is good for dogs in all sizes. Set it up in a familiar area, if your dog is shy. You can leave it in the house or yard for a couple of days, if your dog is the barking type. Then it can smell and inspect it in its own pace. Always remember to use baby steps training an insecure dog.

To encourage it to get up on the table you can use treats or its favorite toy. And remember it may well take several lesson. If it loses interest, you should try something new like placing yourself on the table. Then you can either hold it or have it on leash, while you are sitting on the table. But remember only to treat it when it comes against you. Never reward it, when it is pulling away.

Later you might want the dog jumping on the table using a cue like Table, Stay on the table and Come when you are calling. Build your distance to the table slowly, so you do not push the dog to hard.

Following the above instructions, you can slowly introduce new obstacles. When it is able to succeed new pieces of equipment, you will see its confidence grow.

Stop Your Dog From Pulling On The Leash - Top Trainer Discloses Method Now

By Remco van Reenen

It can be quite funny to see someone being pulled along by a strong dog on a leash. But, I bet it's not funny when you are the one being pulled. To stop your dog from pulling on the leash is really not that difficult to teach and it will only bring you closer to your dog.

The reason why dogs pull at their leash is quite simple really, they love chasing things and if they see a cat, then there is no stopping them. They also get very excited with the idea of actually walking with you and can't contain themselves and hence they walk fast.

To get rid of this bad behavior it would be ideal for you to start training at an early age. If your dog is a few years old then it can be done, but will take a bit more patience, love and perseverance. Do not use a choke collar on your dog as it will hurt his throat and cause a lot of pain and damage.

It is best to commence with training indoors and in the house where there are no distractions. You need undivided attention from your dog. He will not need his harness and leash right away because you are first going to teach him to follow you on your command. Firstly, hold out the palm of your hand and place a small object in the center. Let your dog see this and let him touch it with his nose when you say the command word "touch". Once you get him to touch the object with his nose, then walk away for a few steps and let him follow you. Hold the object at a height which is comfortable for him to touch with his nose. He must now follow you and touch the object with his nose and stay behind you every time you walk further. Give lots of confirming hugs or rubs as he will now identify what you want from you. This will take a few lessons with lots of patience and love from your side.

Do take into consideration that you are teaching your dog a completely new and strange behavior and it will take a while before he gets what you want from him. Persevere and you will be rewarded as well.

Secondly, put his harness around his body and clip on the leash. Take him outside into the garden and repeat the program exactly like you did indoors. Now there are more distractions and he has to only listen to your voice. Teach him to walk next to you or behind you even if he hears sounds and picks up scents. Remember the touching of the object with his nose still plays a big role in his lesson. Even bigger role is your treat and confirmation that you are happy.

When he is ready take him out of your yard and onto the sidewalk or to a park. If he still needs some more training then you can do this there as well. To stop your dog from pulling on the leash is easy and there will be no more running after your dog, as he will now be well trained and an envy for other dog walkers.

Doggie Tricks of the Trade

By Geraldine Dimarco

As many an animal lover would know, dogs are generally a happy, loyal, and lovable breed. Sometimes we hold off adopting a puppy because training her would require too much of an effort. Fortunately, there are simple dog training tips available that cover the basics and help get you started to a colorful and rewarding relationship with your dog.

First of all, you will have to set your leader status in the dog's eyes. Once he recognizes you as his authority he will follow you without much trouble. Establish this daily with regular routine that mirrors the animal world's system. Allow your dog to watch you eat first and feed him only after you're done. Don't walk around him if he is obstructing your path. Gently force him to leave his position by pushing him out of the way. As he acknowledges you to be the leader of the pack, the easier it is to teach him in the future.

Dogs can pick up your emotions even as you handle them. Use a firm and authoritative voice in training. However, it is also important to note that dogs respond well to positive reinforcement. Give him doggie treats every time he correctly accomplishes a command. If he makes a mistake, you have to correct him during the time it happens not after. Train him for ten to fifteen minutes several times a day and be effusive in your praise with his performance.

You will notice that dogs have similar behavioral patterns indicative of their mood. When happy they wag their tails, have an open look and bark a happy sound. Angry dogs bare their teeth, growl and tense up. Understanding your dogs mood will allow you to gauge him better, subsequently giving you response time to be able to train him more effectively.

Training dogs requires patience. It's best to start them as young as six weeks but you can still teach an old dog new tricks. Remain calm and patient when things don't go well at first. Be consistent and he will be able to follow in time. Don't confuse your dogs by changing training time or systems. You might find yourself backtracking because this gets your dog confused.

When teaching your dog, do it in a place with no distractions. Colorful and moving objects can distract him and it will be harder to refocus his attention to you. A quiet backyard or any indoor fenced-in area works well.

Most importantly, don't forget the reason you have a dog. To have fun with him! All that teaching and training can get tiring sometimes. When that happens, stop and have a run around the park with him. Enjoy each other's company. Your canine friend will help you forget problems and think highly of you regardless of your of status, appearance, or performance. They are the best not because they can heel; they are the best because they love you no matter what.

Choosing a Dog Obedience School

By Monique Coincon

Immediately after bringing a dog into your home, you should consider enrolling her in a dog obedience school. The earlier you and your puppy go through a training program the better, as it will smooth the adjustment and help with the bonding and socialization process. Remember that you will be attending classes with your dog, so choose a school that provides a teaching style and environment that puts you both at ease. Establishing a good relationship with your dog early will set the tone for the rest of your time together, and give you the tools for a long and happy friendship.

To start your search for a companion dog obedience school, talk to friends and neighbors who have attended one of your local schools. Take advantage of your time at the dog park to speak with like-minded individuals and share experiences and expectations. Ask your veterinarian questions about schools in the area at your puppy's first wellness visit. Most obedience schools have websites, so look them up online, and read their client reviews.

When you have narrowed down the possibilities, contact the schools and request an interview. Good schools are typically accommodating in this request and understand the importance of a pet owner's comfort with trainers. Discuss the training methods the school endorses. Ask them for references and speak with the actual trainers who would be working with you and your dog. The facilities are important, so be sure to take a tour during your visit.

Do some research into some of the characteristics common to your dog's breed. Breed and age can determine how successful training attempts will be with your dog, and it is important to know what to expect. Younger dogs often benefit the most from group classes, as they tend to be quick learners and may need some help with socialization. Older dogs or those who have had behavior issues in the past may require more intensive one-on-one training. If you have a breed that is notoriously difficult to train, you may find breed specific classes and training methods.

There is a lot of variation in dog obedience school cost. Group classes are the least expensive option, with a series usually priced from $40-$200 depending on your area. For an hour-long, one-on-one session with a trainer, expect to pay anywhere from $25-$125. If the cost of dog obedience school is prohibitively high, contact local non-profit agencies that may be able to direct to you reduced rate classes.

After you have selected a school and are preparing for your first class, an owner should know what to expect. The typical curriculum at a good dog obedience school will teach housebreaking for young puppies, and basic commands like "Sit" and "Stay." Few teach tricks, especially those geared toward younger dogs, but they will help teach you the communication skills to continue training at home. Dog obedience school can be the first step to establishing trust between dogs and people, which is so important in the end.

Dog Training Aids for Your Dog Training Sessions

By Geraldine Dimarco

Your voice is the most important of dog traing aids when training your dog. Use of your dog's name is probably the next most important of the dog training aids at your disposal. Thirdly, a pleasant, persuasive tone of voice is a must.

Speak to your dog all the time while you're engaged in dog training. Training your dog to retrieve may take some time, and dog training aids can come in useful for this purpose. A very light dumbbell is a good dog training aid to use when training your dog to retrieve. Again, use your voice to effect - immediately your dog takes the dumbbell, praise him repeatedly in a happy voice, and also pet him.

Don't ever use an angry tone of voice when dog training. Getting angry with your dog will defeat the purpose of getting your dog to comply with your wishes. It will cause your dog to become anxious and possibly confused.

Your dog always wants to please you. Keep this firmly in mind when dog training. If your dog does not understand what you want him to do straight away, come back to the art of persuasion. And exercise patience with your dog.

As soon as your dog understands what you want him to do, he will take great delight in, e.g. taking the dumbbell from you. In fact, you'll probably find that your dog will be happy to retrieve the dumbbell from you again and again.

If your dog is having trouble understanding that you want him to take the dumbbell, gently offer him the dumbbell and if necessary, open his mouth wide enough to accommodate the dumbbell and place the dumbbell in his mouth. You may even need to close his mouth around the dumbbell.

Dog training times are a wonderful opportunity for you to spend one on one time with your dog. Dogs love this. They love training with you, but you will need to be patient at times. Your dog will not always understand what you want him to do, but as soon as he does, he will be happy to comply.

Once you have placed the dumbbell in your dog's mouth several times, encourage your dog to take the dumbbell from your hand himself.

Once your dog understands the taking of the dumbbell, you need to extend the reach of the item. Place the dumbbell on the ground in front of your dog and ask him to "Retrieve" or "Fetch". Then start moving the dumbell further and further away from him. Your dog will soon get the idea.

You'll Never Scoop Up Another Living Room Accident Again - The Guide To Potty Training Dogs

By Geraldine Dimarco

Are you loving your dog only until he plants another bomb in your immaculate living room carpet? It seems that your home can benefit greatly from some potty training dogs tips. Here are some simple techniques that will keep you and your pet's love fest undisturbed in a few short weeks.

House training dogs is not exactly the most enjoyable part of dog ownership; this is why you will find many adult dogs still untrained in the ways of proper toilet habits. It is always simpler to teach puppies but training older dogs on this is still a relatively manageable goal.

It will be helpful to know that it is easier to train older canines to do than to don't. What this means is that if he is not taught how to go out to eliminate; you will find it almost impossible to undo this learned behavior. You will need to teach him a new habit. In this scenario, it is going outdoors to do his business.

Choose an area for this specific purpose. Around ten to fifteen minutes after meal times, go out and walk him around the designated spot. As you walk back and forth around the spot, clearly speak out a phrase that relates to this particular activity like, 'go potty'. Say it repeatedly until he finally 'goes potty'. Praise him enthusiastically right after to let him know he's done a good job. Do this for a few weeks, always using the same toilet area. Remember house training dogs require consistency in the patterns you set.

Dog accidents can still crop up even when you are in the middle of potty training him. If you catch in the act, quickly stop him and take him outside to finish his business. Give him treats and play with him right after he successfully finishes doing it outside. If you find the mound of poop alone with no dog in sight, do not look for him and start yelling. He will not understand that you are getting mad because of this particular action. Be vigilant to the dog right after his eating time to avoid future similar incidents.

When it happens, immediately clean up the accidents as thoroughly as possible. A deodorizing solution should be applied to remove any residual smell the poop might leave behind. Dogs will sniff out the area and use it again for the same purposes. Keep their cages as small as comfortably possible to aid in potty training dogs. Animals do not relish sleeping in the toilet area so they will restrain eliminating until you can get them outside.

Do not feed him or put water and food inside his cage at night so your sleep will not be disturbed. You can take him outside to discharge in the morning or even after he wakes up from a short cat, I mean, dog nap. When you have succeeded in teaching him how to go out for this particular activity, see to it that leaving the house is as convenient as possible for him. A swinging dog flap installed in your doors or a cage near an open back door will do the job.

Potty training dogs is a priority for the responsible pet owner. It serves as good mental exercise for your dog and your home will be thankful to you for it.

5 Questions For The In Home Dog Training Candidate

By Geraldine Dimarco

How many chewed up shoes do you have in your closet? Do you constantly have to spot check your home for little souvenirs your dog might have left over for you to clean? Thats not a lot of fun now is it? If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired with your dogs manners then maybe its time to get some dog training in to his life.

Owners who want to personally train their dogs but cannot do so for whatever reason, are beginning to appreciate the mighty services of trainers who are hired to teach your pet. These professionals (either individuals or company connected) train your dogs for you while you sit back and watch the progress from the comfort of your very own home. Yes, in home dog training is the answer but what are the questions? Here are the five important things you need to ask before launching into the world of canine home education.

How high up the obedience ladder is your dog? If your pet knows the basic commands down, then you should consider training him yourself. The owner is always the best person to teach his own. However, if you really don't know the first thing about dog training or have no chance to do so, then have the professionals take a look at what can be done to Fido as soon as possible.

Where can I look for the excellent trainers? The good trainers are known by the dogs they have handled. Ask your family, friends, or neighbors if they have had experience with these professionals. Search through the internet and yellow pages for the services of a company or individual that comes highly recommended by canine organizations or blogs and forums. Have Your Dog Train With The Best With The Right Dog Training DVD

By Geraldine Dimarco

Do you want a dog that can sit, fetch and roll over on command? Yeah, I thought so. Well, can you spare the funds in enrolling him in a professional canine school? Yeah, I thought as much as well. Dog training can cost you a pretty dime and if you can spare it, go right ahead. However, if you cant, dont think you should make do with an untrained dog. It is a necessity to have your pet trained. Dog schools are an expense we could all do without, its alright. There are many dog training DVDs that can do the job instead.

A dog training DVD will most likely be promoted by a professional and recognized dog trainer. And by dog trainer, I don't mean someone who has finally mastered the command "Sit!" to his dog. The person (or persons) in the instructional video should be certified or at least has finished the necessary courses in a licensed animal training school. Search the web for well respected trainers who may have resources being sold in the market today.

Before you plan to get a product like this, ask yourself what it is your dog needs training for. If he is puppy or a newly adopted dog with no training whatsoever yet, then purchase a product that will teach the basic obedience commands. If there is a specific area you want to improve on, then you will need to find a site with a large collection of training materials. Look for the appropriate title you will need from their product offerings.

Where are some of the places you can go to for these DVDs? Unfortunately since there are very few, if any, video shops nowadays that offer animal training videos; the addresses you should go to are the ones the search engine lead you to. You can check Amazon.com for leads. Niche websites on canine training will have a page of product offerings that will include training materials you can flip through. There is also the option of buy and sell sites, however these are not reliable sources and should be avoided if you can.

The average price for good dog training videos range from $20-$50; depending on the what is included in the package, if there are additional discs or related literature. Many websites will offer an attractive discount or gifts if you put in your order right away. If you know that the instructional DVD you're buying will be used often, then purchase it as soon as you can. However, if you are just enticed by the great bargain of it all, don't swipe that credit card just yet. You may need to buy something more important in the near future.

A well-trained dog is an affordable luxury any pet owner can get. With dog training DVDs, you can have professional trainers teach your dog right in your living room for a fraction of the cost. Fido may not be trotting the grounds of any prestigious dog academy anytime soon -- but thanks to the internet, the dog academy can now go to him.

Find Out Tips To Puppy Potty Training

By Todd Hammerstein

Getting a new puppy? I'll bet you are so excited. I'm not going to break your excitement, but I will tell you that once you get your puppy home he will push your patience further than you thought it could go. One of the first, and most difficult, tasks is to teach your dog to go outside to potty. This takes patience and effort on your part.

If you try to potty train your dog to go to potty outside before it is a month old you may be wasting your time. It's easier and better to start potty training your puppy around two months of age. At this point, the best approach is to work out some kind of routine with your puppy. Haphazard training rarely works.

Instead of running your puppy outside every few minutes, start with thirty minute intervals. The times between going outside can be longer or shorter depending on your dog. Then, take your puppy out around mealtime, so that your own meal will not be interrupted to jump up and run outside with your puppy.

Establishing a training routine and sticking to it will help you train your puppy more quickly. It's hard to accomplish without a schedule. The sooner you establish a training schedule with your puppy, the better you will feel about your puppy and the more at ease the puppy will become.

If you think working on a routine takes potty training your dog too far, reconsider. Establishing a routine is a proven way to train your dog and it is pretty simple to establish a regular routine. Your dog will learn more easily when following a routine.

Sometimes you have to try to determine why your puppy doesn't want to go outside. This is difficult, but not the worst problem you will face. There are other issues like puppy whining and barking. Take one thing at a time. Don't give your puppy sensory overload. Get him accustomed to pottying outside first. This will be your most pressing task.

All About Crate Training Dogs

By Geraldine Dimarco

Have you ever read about crate training dogs? It sounds like an inhumane act to dogs that don't do as they're told. Surprisingly, it's actually the contrary. Crate training is a good method of training based on the dogs' natural need for security.

It was said that dogs shared the same ancestors as wolves. While I cannot be absolutely sure on the validity of that tidbit, it is a definite fact that dogs were once animals that lived in the wild. Their earlier canine forefathers utilized dark and secured lairs as their dens. This was there protection from all the dangers that were out in the open space. It is on this principle that crate training is based on.

Crate training is highly effective in house training dogs wherein you contain them to a place that you can feel safe leaving them in. The puppies in the crate will not be in danger of inflicting harm on them, other people or furniture in the house. You can go on long trips without much difficulty because your dog is tucked happily away in his crate. Remember, crates are his nesting area so there is no need to worry about feeling inhumane towards the dog.

Not all animals should be crate trained. Some dogs have had serious trauma in homes before and will get hysterical when placed in a confined box. It is advisable to not follow through if this is the case. Other dogs that are large will break the crate they are contained in and hurt themselves in their panic. There are some pet owners who are still uncomfortable, no matter what facts are presented to them, with the thought of putting their living pets inside a box.

Crate training dogs hinges on how the dog owner essentially views the matter. If thinking of your dog in a box makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to push through with this method of training. However, if you believe that this will be advantageous to you and your dog's personal space; you will find some helpful tips on how to go about doing this in the next paragraph.

Find a spot that is close to where people would be hanging out often. Ensure that the crate is a comfortable size that can hold the interesting things for the dog to play with. When he is inside, do not close the box just yet. Talk to him and pet him through his crate. Feed him inside. When it seems alright, start closing the door of the crate for several minutes while you are still in the room. If the animal starts to whimper and complain loudly, let him quiet down first before you let him out. This is of course a little frightening for the little pet so do not hurry him this whole process.

Remember, more than anything, this should be a place that the dogs go to de-stress and calm themselves from a busy household. Never use this as punishment for whatever mistakes he might have done. When he is comfortable alone in the crate already, leave the house for short intervals and assess his response to the new arrangement. If there is no big incident, then you can pat yourself on the back for a job successfully accomplished. You are now an owner of well deserved free time and a crate trained dog.
